Christmassy Mosaic Crochet Scarf Pattern – Free
Looking to get into the Christmas spirit and get a taste of mosaic crochet? You’ve come to the right place! This Christmas scarf is so fun to make and will add a warm and festive touch to all of your holiday outfits. The Nordic Star Mosaic Crochet Scarf pattern is free, right here on the blog.
The Nordic Star Mosaic Scarf is a great intro mosaic crochet project, since the pattern is only 25 rows in total. You’ll invest a relatively small amount of time and end up with a beautiful crochet gift for the holidays (or as a special treat for yourself)!
Then, if you end up loving mosaic crochet as much as I hope you do, you can confidently take on a bigger challenge—like the Mosaic Nordic Winter Afghan or the Gingerbread Mosaic Crochet Blanket.

The Yarn
For the Nordic Star Mosaic Crochet Scarf, I used Wander acrylic yarn from Furls Crochet. This yarn was provided to me for use in the 2024 Furls Blog Hop. This affordable acrylic yarn comes in so many vivid the colors and has a wonderful soft and shiny texture.
I’ve used this yarn for several of my other designs, including all these Christmas projects:
- Nordic Star Stocking
- Granny Bobble
- Spumoni Bobble
- Striped Bauble Ornament
- Plus Side Bobble
- Simple Moss Bobble

The Hook
The hook I used to work up this pattern was an H/5.0mm Streamline Resin hook from Furls Crochet. I love the way these Streamline Hooks feel in my hand and how the yarn glides across the resin.
Furls provided me with this particular Aries Streamline hook to use for the 2024 Furls Blog Hop. However, own several Furls hooks and use them all the time. I definitely recommend you try one for yourself.
**Note that many of the Furls hooks are limited edition. So if you find that the resin hooks are sold out, you may also like the Furls Streamline Metal Hooks. They have a similar ergonomic shape.
Of course, we all crochet differently. You may find that you prefer something other than an H hook. That’s OK! It’s always a good idea to make a swatch using the yarn & hook of your choice so you will have a better idea of your tension and the size of your finished scarf.

What is Overlay mosaic crochet?
To successfully complete this scarf, you’ll need to be familiar with mosaic crochet. If you’ve never heard of the technique before, that’s okay! Let me break it down for you.
Overlay Mosaic Crochet is a technique that requires you to work in the BLO (back loop only) and then drop down to pick up the front loop of stitches from lower rows which creates textured stitches that lay over the stitches from previous rows and can be used to create wonderfully intricate patterns.
These patterns are worked in one direction only, fastening off the working yarn at the end of each row, and beginning again at the beginning of the piece — no turning involved. Each new row consists of only ONE color, but with the use of the sc and drop down dc stitches, you get the mosaic design. Most overlay mosaic patterns come with a chart. The symbols on the chart tell you when to use a dc and when to use the special drop down dc.
It seems complicated, but I promise, it’s super easy (and addictive) as you go. Not only that, but once you master overlay mosaic crochet, you’ll be able to create many of the most popular designs on this blog.
Visit this blog post for a basic overview of the technique

Pattern Notes
- This pattern uses the overlay mosaic technique. If unfamiliar, be sure to read this blog post with the basics.
- The chart for the pattern is included.
- Pattern is worked from right to left on Right Side only, from the bottom up.
- Every row is worked in a different color.
- Each row starts with a slip knot, leaving a long tail to act as fringe.
- Fasten off at the end of each row, leaving a long tail to act as fringe.
- You may choose to make your Foundation Row the traditional way by chaining, then adding your sc on top. Be sure to make one additional chain than the number of stitches needed for your project.
