FREE CAL – Mosaic In A Month CAL | Geometric Mosaic Crochet blanket | Crochet Along
Want to make a colorful mosaic crochet blanket with 11 different gorgeous geometric designs? Join the Mosaic in Month CAL and you can have your very own heirloom blanket in just a few weeks.
A Mosaic Crochet Blanket for all Seasons
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I love designing Christmas-themed blankets, like the Nordic Winter Blanket C2C CAL and the Mosaic Nordic Blanket CAL.
This year, I’m bringing you another overlay mosaic crochet blanket CAL. But this geometric mosaic crochet blanket pattern is great for any season!
Introducing the Mosaic in a Month Afghan / Blanket CAL!
What is a Crochet Along?
If you have never participated in a Crochet Along before, you may be wondering what in the world I am talking about. A Crochet Along (CAL) is essentially an event where you crochet along with other people creating the same project. A each part of the pattern is released bit by bit, and you work at the same pace as other participants.
Interested in other blanket CALs?
Pin this project for later.
How it will work.
11 different designers will design 11 mosaic crochet afghan stripes. The chart for each design will be free on the designers’ blogs. To find the free charts, scroll down on this post until you see pictures of each section and press the button that says “Click here for the free chart.”
Each section of the CAL will be released on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from June 3rd through June 26th. Then, we’ll finish it all off with a border, to be released on July 1st.
I will send out an email to announce the release of each new design, or you can simply come to this page and click on the new design to be directed to the FREE chart for that new section.
If you prefer to have downloadable charts or to follow the written instructions instead, you can purchase the full pattern, which includes the mosaic crochet pattern charts and written instructions for each section in a PDF.
After grabbing each new pattern, make sure you hop on over to the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community. You can ask questions, share photos of your WIPs and finished squares, watch Live videos. It will be a lot of fun! If you don’t have Facebook, you can still participate in the CAL by creating your blanket on your own. Definitely post pictures and share about the CAL on any social media you have. Be sure to tag me @juniperandoakes and use #MosaicInAMonthCAL so we can see your progress.
Join the Juniper & Oakes crochet community!
I will also be posting videos on YouTube! I already have a playlist for this CAL set up, and more videos will be added as they become available.
Follow me on all of my social media for bonus CAL content:
Don’t miss an update.
I will be sending out an email each time a new design is released. You will be the first to be notified of the next part of the CAL or any other news. Sign up now!
The Schedule.
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from June 3rd-July 1st, a new part of the blanket will be released.
Each new section will be offered as a free chart on the designer’s blog.
Scroll down to the bottom of the this page to find the picture of each new section.
If you don’t want to wait for each new section or follow just the chart, go ahead and purchase the full blanket pattern ebook. Not only will you have instant access to all of the charts for each blanket strip, but you will also get the written instructions as well. I don’t know about you, but I think it is easier and faster to follow the written instructions.
How big will my blanket be?
Such a good questions! The answer will depend on many factors: yarn, hook, tension, etc.
My blanket is approximately 37” x 53″.
This size makes a perfect larger baby blanket, toddler blanket, or lapghan.
The Yarn.
The yarn I used for this blanket is StyleCraft Special DK.
This rainbow crochet blanket was designed in six bright colors, as well as a silvery white (Color A). Of course, you can use whatever colors you want! You could use earthy hues. Or try several shades of one color for an ombre effect. I will NOT take it personally if you take creative liberties on the color scheme. In fact, I would love to see what awesome color combos you come up with! So be sure to share pictures in the FB group.
The amount of yarn needed depends on different factors like yarn weight, hook size, and tension. Each stripe uses approximately 180 yards of the bright color, plus 173 yards of the white. I made two stripes of each color except for violet, which has only one. Altogether, it’s roughly 1900 yards of the white; 320 yards of red, orange, yellow, green, and blue; and 180 yards of violet. Plus you’ll need a little extra for the striped border.
I used approximately 1900 yards of Color A and 320 yards of Each other color (except for purple, which was 180 yards). That’s 6 skeins Hint of Silver (Color A) and 1 skein each of lipstick, spice, dandelion, green, aster, and violet.
The Hook.
I used a G/4.00 mm hook to make my blanket. I love this Silver Streamline Metal Crochet Hook from Furls Crochet. This hook fits great in my hand and the yarn slides easily across the smooth metal. If you have never tried a Furls hook, I suggest you head on over to their website and order one now.
You don’t have to use a G hook. Choose whatever hook you’re comfortable using with your chosen yarn. Just be sure to make a swatch using the yarn & hook of your choice so you are not surprised by the size of your blanket.
The Geometric Mosaic Crochet Blanket In real life.
We recently took a quick trip to the beach over the weekend. And even though it’s starting to heat up outside, those breezes over the water can still give you a little bit of a chill. This colorful mosaic crochet blanket is the perfect size to wrap around you at the beach when you need a little extra warmth.
Because it’s made in 100% acrylic yarn, it’s machine washable and easy to care for. So you can take it on all your summer adventures, worry-free! Just make sure to shake out any excess sand before you toss it in the washing machine.
What is overlay mosaic crochet?
I have written this whole post with the assumption that you all know what mosaic crochet means.
Overlay Mosaic Crochet is a technique that requires you to work in the BLO (back loop only) and then drop down to pick up the front loop of stitches from lower rows which creates textured stitches that lay over the stitches from previous rows and can be used to create wonderfully intricate patterns.
These patterns are worked in one direction only, fastening off the working yarn at the end of each row, and beginning again at the beginning of the piece — no turning involved. Each new row consists of only ONE color, but with the use of the sc and drop down dc stitches, you get the mosaic design. Most overlay mosaic patterns come with a chart. The symbols on the chart tell you when to use a dc and when to use the special drop down dc.
It seems complicated, but I promise, it’s super easy (and addictive) as you go.
Visit this blog post for a basic overview of the technique
Feel free to watch the video below to familiarize yourself a bit with the technique.
Please SUBSCRIBE to my channel, comment that you joined in from the Mosaic in a Month CAL, and like the videos. Thank you so much!

Tasha & I met in person last year in Memphis. We had coffee & chatted about yarn like we’d know each other for years! we were each supposed to design a pattern using a surprise skein of yarn from the other person’s stash… I still need to design mine. Hmmm. This is a good reminder!

I always have many projects going on at the same time! So fun!
This looks so exciting! I can’t wait to get started. Thank you so much for setting this up!😀
I’m so glad you are joining me! Happy crocheting
Hi, is section 2 only on Facebook and the ebook? I was hoping to do the free blanket pattern, but I don’t do Facebook. If there’s another way available for me to obtain the free pattern section?
Hi! If you don’t use Facebook, you can access the pattern here.
Hello. Am I getting this right: Part one ends with a white row and part two begins with a white row? So there are two white rows next to each other?
Yep. That’s right!
Why can’t I save the photos and the graph for this pattern???
Because it is not meant to be saved. The graph and written instructions are meant to be viewed for free on the blog. If you’d like an ad-free, printable version, we’re offering the ebook PDF to purchase.
Happy crocheting!
While waiting for admission to the fb group, can you provide the total row count without the border? I’m going bigger!
I think the row count is about 235.
Happy crocheting
Dear Erin,
Thank you very much for all your fantastic, all your beautiful mosaic patterns.
I’m “newborn” in this kind of crochet but I would like very much to begin it.
I think that for the first experiment I probe make a less thing – eg a cushion with two colours only.
Have a nice week!
Marianne
Hi marianne, were you able to experiment a bit with mosaic crochet?
Erin, where is the border instructions please ma’am?
Here is the border instructions: https://juniperandoakes.com/blog/crochet-a-rainbow-colored-envelope-border/
I’m a bit late making this but I’m loving it. However there’s a discrepancy between the photos and the instructions for rows 3 and 13 of the Stepping Stones strip. Still love it though!
Hello.
Thank you for your comment and for joining the CAL. If you ever notice any errors, please email me and I will do my best to fix it asap. All of my patterns are made by humans, and errors are bound to happen. It’s ok! I never take offense to people pointing them out. I love my crochet community.
