Welcome to the first installment of the Mosaic in a Month CAL! If you are just joining in, and need more info about the Mosaic in a Month CAL, read this post.
But I’ll give you a quick summary right here. We are all creating an heirloom geometric crochet blanket together over in the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community FB Group. Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during June 2024, a new free blanket section chart will be released on my blog in blog hop fashion, as there are 10 other designers who helped make this blanket!
The 1st section of the Mosaic in a Month CAL is the Mosaic Triangles section designed by me, Erin of Juniper & Oakes. This mosaic crochet triangle blanket pattern is just one of 12 gorgeous designs that we’ll be making together during June 2024!
This first design features interlocking triangles, made in a simple 12-row repeat that you will memorize in no time. That makes it a perfect project to make while relaxing in the shade.

Instructions
Overlay Mosaic Crochet
This geometric blanket CAL uses the overlay mosaic crochet technique to create each section. This technique is easier than it looks and is super addictive! You’ll need to know how to make foundation single crochet (FSC), back loop only single crochet (BLOsc), and front loop only double crochet (FLOdc), as well as beginning and ending border stitches.
You can learn everything you need to know about overlay mosaic crochet from this blog post, which includes photo and video tutorials for each stitch as well.
Skill Level: Adventurous Beginner/Intermediate
Gauge
23 stitches x 22 rows = 4” x 4” in square
A swatch of the pattern
Size:
Approximately 37” x 53” (the full blanket)
How big will This Section be?
The answer depends on many factors: yarn, hook, tension, etc. If you work a gauge swatch in the pattern stitch and measure it, you can multiply that out to estimate the finished size of your blanket. Mine starts with a foundation row of 195 stitches and is and 21 rows high.

Notes
- Pattern is worked from right to left on Right Side only. (If you are left handed, feel free to work from left to right according to the chart below).
- Every row is worked in a different color.
- Fasten off at the end of each row.
- Every row begins with a beginning border stitch.
- Every row ends with an ending border stitch.
- Sc are worked in BLO of the previous row, unless otherwise noted.
- Dc are worked in FLO of stitch 2 rows below, skipping the stitch behind unless otherwise noted.
- You may choose to repeat the pattern as many times as you wish. Make sure your Foundation Row is made up of any multiple of 48 plus 3 extra stitches. I will be using 4 repeats. So my foundation row is (4×48) + 3 = 195 stitches).
- The patterns include a chart and written instructions below. You may want to refer to each.
- The colors on the chart indicate how the finished project will look.
- Please join the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community FB Group and share pictures and questions that arise.
The Yarn: Light Worsted
Stylecraft Special DK (323y, 100g, 100% acrylic) or other light worsted yarn in two colors
Main Color: Hint of Silver
Contrast Color: Lipstick
Stylecraft Special DK is a durable acrylic yarn that’s machine washable and dryer-friendly! So you can feel comfortable taking your blanket to the park, the beach, or anywhere your summer adventures take you. The main color is Hint of Silver, and the contrast color is Lipstick, a bright, warm red. If you prefer a different color, this yarn comes in an incredible 91 shades!
The Hook: 5mm
I used a G/4.00 mm Silver Streamline Metal Hook from Furls Crochet to make my blanket. This hook feels so good in my hands and the yarn slides easily across the polished aluminum. If you have never tried a Furls hook, I suggest you head on over to their website and order one now.
You don’t have to use an G hook. If you want to try a different size, just be sure to make a swatch using the yarn and hook of your choice. Then multiply it by the number of stitches so you won’t be surprised by the size of your blanket.
This section was designed in two colors: red and white. But you can choose whatever colors you want!
Get creative! Maybe instead of rainbow colors, neutrals or earth tones are a better complement to your decor. I won’t get offended if you take creative liberties on the color scheme. In fact, I would love to see what fun color schemes you come up with. So share your color combos on the FB group!
The amount of yarn needed depends on different factors like yarn weight, hook size, and tension. Each stripe uses approximately 180 yards of the bright color, plus 173 yards of the white. The blanket has two stripes of each color except for there’s only one violet. So in all, you’ll use about 1900 yards of the white; 320 yards of red, orange, yellow, green, and blue; and 180 yards of violet. Plus you’ll need a little extra for the striped border.

Can you tell me where a printable version of week one is? I can’t seem to find one.
Thank you
There is no free printable. It is simply free to view on the blog.
It will not pin. Can’t save for later.
Hmm. Not sure what’s wrong. You can bookmark the page.

I wonder if I need to fix somemthing… Hmmm. Let me look around and get back to you later.
Bought 2 times the amount of stylecraft special DK yarn. I am hoping to increase size (width) by about half. I believe that means I need two more repeats of the pattern (6 rather than 4). Will that work?
Yarn just delivered. Excited to start!
Hi Pat!
I hope you are loving the crochetalong so far. Did you end up going with 6 repeats? I’d love to see your progress.
