A Festive Mosaic Crochet Christmas Tree Skirt

This 42 x 42-inch mosaic crochet Christmas tree skirt is worked from the center out using overlay mosaic crochet. Although it’s crocheted in rows rather than joined rounds, the four corners naturally shape the square as you go. To make that construction work smoothly, I developed a couple unique techniques that I haven’t seen in other mosaic crochet patterns. If you’ve made some of my other designs before, you’ll notice the beginning and ending border stitches are worked a little differently this time around.

Don’t worry, though! I’ll walk you through everything with a dedicated video tutorial, including how to get started and my favorite method for weaving in the ends.

If overlay mosaic crochet looks a little intimidating at first glance, don’t let that stop you. The technique uses simple stitches and quickly becomes second nature once you settle into the rhythm. Many crocheters find it so relaxing that it’s hard to put the project down!

Because this tree skirt is worked in rows, you’ll have more yarn ends than you would in one of my mosaic crochet squares. You can weave them in as you go, add a decorative fringe, or finish the project with an envelope border. Since the tree skirt lies flat beneath your Christmas tree, the back won’t be on display, so there’s no need to make it reversible. That keeps the finishing simple and lets you spend more time enjoying the stitching.

Yarn Suggestions for the Mosaic Crochet Christmas Tree Skirt

For this tree skirt, I reached for Lion Brand Heartland, a 100% acrylic worsted weight (#4) yarn inspired by America’s national parks. One of the things I love most about Heartland is its soft, heathered colors, which give finished projects a cozy, rustic feel. For this design, I chose Olympia, a rich deep blue, and White Sands, a soft gray, creating a timeless winter palette that looks right at home beneath the Christmas tree.

Of course, this pattern would be just as beautiful in any worsted weight acrylic yarn. You’ll need about 1,000 yards each of two colors, but don’t feel limited to my color choices! Traditional Christmas reds and greens, elegant neutrals, or even a colorful stash-busting version would all give this tree skirt its own unique personality. One of my favorite things about sharing patterns is seeing the creative color combinations everyone comes up with.

The Hook

I crocheted this Christmas tree skirt with my J/6.0 mm Streamline Metal hook from Furls Crochet. I find the comfortable shape and polished metal finish especially enjoyable for mosaic crochet, since the stitches flow so smoothly from one to the next.

What can I do with the all the ends?

Since this mosaic crochet Christmas tree skirt is worked in rows, you’ll have a few more ends than you would in a typical mosaic crochet project—but don’t let that discourage you!

For my own tree skirt, I wove the ends into the back of the work, two at a time, where they’re completely hidden. If weaving in ends isn’t your favorite part of crochet, though, you have plenty of other options. A simple fringe, twisted fringe, or envelope border all make beautiful finishes, and each gives the project a slightly different look.
