It all started with the Nordic Star Blanket CAL. Since then, this design has taken on a life of its own! From the classic blanket to a matching scarf, stocking, and baby blanket, each piece celebrates that same bold, beautiful Nordic Star motif. These overlay mosaic crochet patterns bring rich colorwork to life without the fuss of tangled yarn or endless ends. Explore the full collection of Nordic Star crochet patterns below and bring a little Nordic charm to your next project!👇

What Is Mosaic Crochet?
Overlay mosaic crochet is a colorwork technique where you single crochet into the back loop only (BLOsc) and sometimes drop down and work a double crochet into the front loop of a previous row (FLOdc). These overlapping stitches create beautiful, textured designs that look far more intricate than they actually are.
In this method, each row is worked from the same side. You fasten off at the end of the row and start fresh again at the beginning. No turning needed! Every row uses just one color, but thanks to a mix of BLOsc and FLOdc stitches, the mosaic pattern appears row by row. Most overlay mosaic designs include a chart that shows exactly when to use each stitch. It might look a little overwhelming at first, but once you get going, it’s surprisingly simple … and seriously addictive!
