Create an Heirloom Mosaic Crochet Blanket
The Nordic Star Mosaic Crochet Blanket is an overlay mosaic crochet pattern that was originally released as a Crochet Along in April 2023. This timeless design has been a favorite of crocheters in my community!
The Nordic Mosaic Crochet Blanket is more than just a project. It’s a legacy in the making. Your family is sure to love this afghan and pass it down throughout the generations! I know your children will fight to have their name next to this blanket on your will.

What is a Crochet Along?
Have you ever participated in a Crochet Along before? If not, I think you’re going to love it! If CALs are a new thing for you, let me give you the basics. Essentially a Crochet Along (CAL) is an event where you crochet along with other people who are all making the same project.
This pattern was originally released bit by bit, and crocheters worked on it at the same time. However, you can now purchase the entire pattern at once. You can work at your own pace. BUT still hop over to the Juniper & Oakes Facebook Group and share your progress so everyone can see and be encouraged by your work! You can ask questions, share photos of your WIPs and finished sections. It will be a lot of fun!
If you don’t have Facebook, you can still participate in the CAL by creating your blanket on your own. Definitely post pictures and share about the CAL on any social media you have. Be sure to tag me @juniperandoakes and so we can see your progress.

Inspiration from Your Fellow Crocheters
If you love to start big crochet projects but struggle to finish them, joining a CAL can keep you motivated to finish! Since the original run in 2023, crocheters in the Juniper & Oakes Facebook Group have created their own beautiful versions of this afghan. So when you work the Nordic Star Mosaic Crochet Blanket pattern and share your progress in the group, you’re crocheting in community with yarn lovers all over the world!
Each crocheter has put their own spin on the pattern by experimenting with different colors and making the pattern in a different sizes. Feel free to use these designs as a starting point to make something entirely your own! It’s always fascinating to see how each person interprets the pattern.
How big will my Nordic Star Mosaic blanket be?
That’s a fantastic question! The answer may vary, depending on the your hook, yarn, tension, etc.
My finished blanket is approximately 48” x 60” inches.
This size makes a decent-sized throw to drape on the back of your couch to add a touch of cozy, wintry charm to any room! It would also make a nice lap blanket, a thoughtful gift for someone who is always cold!
How long does it take to crochet the Nordic Star Mosaic Blanket?
The CAL was designed to be completed in 13 weeks. So if you keep on track with one section per week, you should be able to complete it in about that time. But feel free to work at whatever pace is comfortable to you. This classic design never goes out of style!
The Yarn.

The yarn I used for this blanket is Furls Wander, a worsted weight acrylic yarn that’s machine washable and comes in beautiful, vivid colors. Projects made from this yarn have a soft and shiny texture that looks and feels amazing! The colors and yardage I used are as follows:
- Atlantis (Color A) – 2160 yards/18 skeins
- Wintermint (Color B) – 1800 yards/15 skeins
Want to make it easy? You can also purchase all of the yarn you need for this blanket from Furls Crochet in one convenient kit! Use the button below to purchase the kit. 👇
*Note: This yarn and kit have been discontinued as of August 1, 2025. However, if you act quickly, you may be able to buy them at a discount!*
Yarn Substitutions
If the kit & the yarn are currently out of stock, here are some alternatives you can try.
- Brava Worsted (100% acrylic) $
- Swish Worsted (100% fine superwash merino wool) $$$
- Others are using Red Heart Super Saver
- Or simply look at Yarn Sub & make your own choice. Get creative!
The Hook.
I used a G+/4.5 mm hook for my blanket—in particular, a Furls Streamline hook. I own and use regularly use several hooks from Furls. I love how these hooks feel in my hand. The ergonomic design allows me to crochet away without wrist or palm pain and the yarn moves with ease from the hook while working up your stitches. These hooks are fabulous investments and I highly recommend you check them out!
What is overlay mosaic crochet?
To successfully complete this CAL, you’ll need to be familiar with mosaic crochet. If you’ve never heard of the technique before, that’s okay! Let me break it down for you.
Overlay Mosaic Crochet is a technique that requires you to work in the BLO (back loop only) and then drop down to pick up the front loop of stitches from lower rows which creates textured stitches that lay over the stitches from previous rows and can be used to create wonderfully intricate patterns.
These patterns are worked in one direction only, fastening off the working yarn at the end of each row, and beginning again at the beginning of the piece — no turning involved. Each new row consists of only ONE color, but with the use of the sc and drop down dc stitches, you get the mosaic design. Most overlay mosaic patterns come with a chart. The symbols on the chart tell you when to use a dc and when to use the special drop down dc.
It seems complicated, but I promise, it’s super easy (and addictive) as you go. Not only that, but once you master overlay mosaic crochet, you’ll be able to create many of the most popular designs on this blog.

Erin, I am working on the Nordic star pattern. I’m having a problem in section 6 part one row four. They have you working a front loop double and during the beginning of the repeat you’re supposed to work 13 Front Loop doubles and there’s a double crochet to work into Which you can’t do
