Steady Path – Easy Mosaic Crochet Square – Free Pattern + Chart

The Steady Path Square is exactly that kind of project. This easy mosaic crochet square features a simple repeat that you’ll memorize quickly, creating a relaxing, meditative stitching experience from the very first rounds.

Sometimes progress isn’t about giant leaps forward. More often, it’s a series of small, steady steps that gradually lead somewhere wonderful. The Steady Path Square celebrates that idea, with short repeats that expand outward from the center like a trail unfolding beneath your feet. Each round builds on the last, creating a design that feels both purposeful and calming to stitch.

A Mosaic Crochet Square Design Worked in the Round

The Steady Path Square is worked using overlay mosaic crochet in the round, from the center out. This technique creates intricate-looking designs while working with just one color at a time. Instead of crocheting through both loops, you’ll work your single crochets in the back loop only. Then, some double crochets will drop down and pick up the unworked front loops from earlier rounds. Those overlay stitches are what form the design.

If mosaic crochet looks intimidating at first glance, don’t worry. It’s much easier than it seems! This technique relies on basic single and double crochet stitches, simply worked in a clever way. And thanks to the easy-to-memorize repeat, the Steady Path Square is a wonderful project for crocheters who are new to mosaic crochet.

Since this square is worked in the round, you’ll carry the unused yarn as you go rather than cutting it after every round. The result is far fewer ends to weave in, leaving you free to settle into the rhythm of the pattern and watch the design emerge.

Invisible Join

Pattern Notes

• Pattern is overlay mosaic crochet worked in the round from the center out. Watch this video to learn more about how to mosaic crochet from the center out. *Note: This video demonstrates the technique on another pattern but the basics are the same.
• Ch 1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
• If you tend to have loose tension when you crochet, you may need to go down a hook size or choose a light worsted weight yarn to make this a 12″ square.
• Sts between *asterisks* are repeated on each side of the square
• Each round (except Round 1) begins with the corner sts.
• The Corner stitches (BLOsc, ch1, BLOsc) are worked together into the BLO of the ch1 of the corner in the row below.
• Carry the unworked yarn under the first BLOsc of each corner, then drop the unworked yarn to the wrong side of the work and continue working.
• The single FLOdc worked just before & after the corners are worked into the same ch st. (See Rounds 7, 8, 12, 13, 19, and 20)
• Work an invisible join after each round.
