Crossroads Mosaic Crochet Square – Free Pattern + Chart
If you love clean lines and graphic designs, this one is for you! Introducing the Crossroads Mosaic Crochet Square, a bold design worked in overlay mosaic crochet in the round. The strong, angular lines create a beautiful optical illusion, giving the square a sense of depth and movement as the pattern expands from the center outward.
Whether you add it to a sampler blanket or let it shine in a project of its own, this square brings a modern, eye-catching touch wherever itโs used.

Inspired by the idea of a crossroads, this design is all about direction and balanceโclean right angles meeting and shifting as they grow. Thereโs something really satisfying about watching those lines take shape, round by round, as the structure of the pattern reveals itself.

A Mosaic Crochet Granny Square Worked in the Round
The Crossroads Mosaic Crochet Square is created using overlay mosaic crochet in the roundโa technique that builds bold, graphic patterns by working some stitches over earlier rounds. Instead of working stitches through both loops as usual, you’ll work single crochets in the back loop only. Then some double crochet stitches are worked down into the unused front loops of stitches below, forming the striking design.
At first glance, mosaic crochet can look a bit complex, but itโs much more approachable than it seems! The pattern relies on simple single and double crochet stitches, combined in a thoughtful way. Once you begin, the rhythm starts to feel natural pretty quickly. Many people find this technique addictive!
Because this square is worked in the round, youโll carry your yarn as you go rather than cutting it at the end of each round. That means fewer ends to weave inโand more time to relax and enjoy watching the pattern take shape.
If this is your first time trying overlay mosaic crochet, youโre in the right place! Be sure to check out my YouTube tutorial for a step-by-step look at working this technique from the center out.

Pattern Notes
- Pattern is overlay mosaic crochet worked in the round from the center out. Watch this video to learn more about how to mosaic crochet from the center out. *Note: This video demonstrates the technique on another pattern but the basics are the same.
- Ch 1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.

- Sts between *asterisks* are repeated on each side of the square
- Each round (except Round 1) begins with the corner sts.
- The Corner stitches (BLOsc, ch1, BLOsc) are worked together into the BLO of the ch1 of the corner in the row below.
- Carry the unworked yarn under the first BLOsc of each corner, then drop the unworked yarn to the wrong side of the work and continue working.
- Work an invisible join after each round.
- A chart for this pattern is included as well.
