Mosaic Crochet Heart Granny Square – Free Pattern | Granny Stitch Sampler CAL
This pattern combines two of my favorite stitches—mosaic crochet and the granny stitch! It starts at the center with an adorable mosaic crochet heart section, surrounded by rounds of granny stitch for a beautiful square with a homey, inviting look.

This square is a great intro project for overlay mosaic crochet in the round. 12 rounds of mosaic crochet at the center give you a taste of the technique. Then, you can relax and work the classic granny stitch for the rest of it. It’s also perfect for crocheters who want to try a unique twist on the traditional granny square.

Pattern Notes
- Pattern is overlay mosaic crochet worked in the round from the center out. Watch my tutorials on mosaic crochet for more information.
- Ch 1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
- Ch 3 at the beginning of a round does count as a dc.
- If you tend to have loose tension when you crochet, you may need to go down a hook size or choose a light worsted weight yarn to make this an 12″ square.
- Sts between *asterisks* are repeated on each side of the square
- Each round (except Round 1) begins with the corner sts.
- The Corner stitches (BLOsc, ch1, BLOsc) are worked together into the BLO of the ch1 of the corner in the row below.
- For the GS Rounds, the Corners state “(GS, ch-1, GS). Since the GS includes a ch-1 already, there will be 2 chains in each corner.
- Carry the unworked yarn under the first BLOsc of each round, then drop the unworked yarn to the wrong side of the work and continue working.
- The single FLOdc worked just before & after the corners are worked into the same ch st. (See Rounds 5, 7, 9, 11, 13)
- Unless otherwise stated, work an invisible join after each round.
- A chart for this pattern is included as well.
- There is a video tutorial for this square. Click here to view.
