The Mosaic Flower Garden Blanket CAL
Welcome the Mosaic Flower Garden Blanket CAL! If you are just joining in, you can read this post to learn everything you need to know.
But let me give you a quick overview right here: We are all crocheting an heirloom floral blanket together over in the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community FB Group. Each Friday and Tuesday from May 2nd through May 30th, 2025, a new free blanket section pattern and chart will be released right here on my blog! We’ll finish off with a border on June 2nd.
This mosaic crochet butterfly and hearts pattern is just one of 9 gorgeous designs that we’ll be combining to make this stunning Springtime afghan during Spring 2025.
This section features a mosaic crochet butterfly with tiny hearts in vibrant purple and warm cream. It’s made in an easy 24-stitch repeat, with lots of cute details that will keep you engaged as you work through the pattern.

Instructions for the Mosaic Crochet Butterfly & Hearts Pattern
Skill Level: Adventurous Beginner/Intermediate
Gauge
15 stitches x 18 rows = 4” x 4” in square
A swatch of the pattern
Size:
Approximately 58” x 66” (the full blanket)
How big will This Section be?
The answer depends on many factors: yarn, hook, tension, etc. If you work a gauge swatch in the pattern stitch and measure it, you can multiply that out to estimate the finished size of your blanket. Mine starts with a foundation row of 195 stitches and is and 24 rows high.
Stitch Abbreviations (US Terminology)
- ANC-FLOdc – Anchored FLO Double Crochet

- EBS – Ending Border Stitch
- FLOdc – Front Loop Only Double Crochet
- Fsc – Foundation single crochet
- RS – Right Side
- sc – Single Crochet
The Overlay Mosaic Crochet Technique
This Flower Garden Blanket CAL uses the overlay mosaic crochet technique to create each section. You’ll need to know how to make foundation single crochet (FSC), back loop only single crochet (BLOsc), and front loop only double crochet (FLOdc), as well as beginning and ending border stitches.
All of these abbreviations may sound confusing but they’re really just variations of basic crochet stitches. This technique is easier than it looks and is super addictive!
You can learn more about overlay mosaic crochet from this blog post, but I’ll briefly cover it here, too.
Mosaic Crochet Basics
- If you’re right-handed, work the chart from right to left.
- If you’re left-handed, you can read the chart left to right. However, be careful with the written instructions, since they may give you a reverse image.
- All rows are worked on the right side of the project.
- Each row is worked in a different color.
- Don’t worry about the color of the boxes. Those colors are just to show you what the finished product will look like. Follow the symbols. Once you get going, it will become second nature.

Special Stitches
Foundation Single Crochet (FSC)
For my mosaic patterns, I like to begin with a row of FSC stitches. This way I can easily add or remove stitches when i miscount after making a foundation row of 200+ stitches.
You can find a video tutorial for the foundation single crochet here. I also demonstrate it at the beginning of the video for this swatch.
Beginning border stitch (BBS)

A standing sc through the post (or the ‘v’) of the stitch below, ensuring that both legs of the stitch on the WS are to the outside of the blanket. (For right-handed crocheters the legs would be secured to the right of the stitch and vice versa for left-handed crocheters.)
Click here for a video tutorial.
Back Loop Only Single Crochet (BLOsc)

Insert hook in back loop of indicated st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through both lps on hook.
Front Loop Only Double Crochet (FLOdc)

Yo, insert hook in front loop of st below the indicated st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through two lps on hook, yo and draw through remaining two lops on hook.
Ending Border Stitch

A sc through the post (or the ‘v’) of the stitch below, ensuring that both legs of the stitch on the WS are to the outside of the blanket. (Similar to BBS, but the back legs of the stitch are secured to the opposite side.)
Click here for a video tutorial.
Anchored FLO Double Crochet (Anc-FLOdc)
With unworked yarn carried across the stitches, insert hook in BLO of indicated stitch and draw up a loop, YO, insert hook in FLO of stitch one row below SAME stitch and draw up a loop, YO and draw through 3 loops on hook, YO and draw through remaining 2 loops on hook.

Envelope Border
Most overlay mosaic crochet designs (unless they are small or are worked in the round) utilize a double/envelope border to hide all of the ends that result in fastening off at the end of each round. You work a border on the back side, then a border on the front side, and seam them together, ensuring all ends are enclosed inside.
We’ll crochet the border in part 10 of the Flower Garden Blanket CAL. But if you’re curious and want to jump ahead, you can click here for a video tutorial of an envelope border.
Reversible / Negative Stitch
Working up this design according to the pattern will result in regular overlay mosaic crochet with a striped backside of the blanket.
You can make the pattern reversible by following this tutorial.
Notes
- Pattern is worked from right to left on Right Side only. (If you are left handed, feel free to work from left to right according to the chart below).
- Every row is worked in a different color.
- Fasten off at the end of each row.
- Every row begins with a beginning border stitch.
- Every row ends with an ending border stitch.
- Sc are worked in BLO of the previous row, unless otherwise noted.
- Dc are worked in FLO of stitch 2 rows below, skipping the stitch behind unless otherwise noted.
- Each pattern begins with 1 border stitch, has a repeat of stitches, 1 stitch to even out the pattern, and 1 border stitch at the end.
- You may choose to repeat the pattern as many times as you wish. Make sure your Foundation Row is made up of any multiple of 48 plus 3 extra stitches. I will be using 4 repeats. So my foundation row is (4×48) + 3 = 195 stitches).
- The patterns include a chart and written instructions below. You may want to refer to each.
- The colors on the chart indicate how the finished project will look.
- Color B is used first so that the background color is Color A throughout
- Section 9 is worked using multiple colors on the contrast color rows. Carry all 3 color strands along with each stitch. Note how the FLOdc stitches in this section are Anc-FLOdc to ensure the unworked strands are secured along the rows. Change back to Color E before each repeat.
- The pattern can be worked up in two colors. Simply ignore any other color changes and alternate your Color A & B throughout.
- Please join the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community FB Group and share pictures and questions that arise.
The Yarn: Worsted
Mary Maxim Maximum Value (474 yds, 227g, 100% Acrylic) or other worsted weight yarn in two colors
- Cottonwood (Color A)
- Medium Violet (Color D)
Maximum Value is a soft worsted weight acrylic yarn that can be machine washed and dried. This yarn is super affordable and creates a beautiful and long-lasting finish.
The Hook: 5mm
I used an H/5.00 mm hook for the body of the blanket and a G+/4.5 mm hook for the border. I love this Gemini Streamline Zodiac Crochet Hook from Furls Crochet. The hook is perfectly shaped to fit in my hand and it has a great weight to it. If you have never tried a Furls hook, I highly recommend that head on over to their website and order one now. If that particular hook is not available, the Laurel Streamline Wooden Hooks, also by Furls, are another great choice.
Of course, these hook sizes are just my preference. Use whatever hook you’re comfortable using with the yarn of your choice. Just be aware that this may change the size of your blanket. So be sure to make a swatch using the yarn and hook you want to use. Then multiply it by the number of stitches so you will have a better idea how big your blanket will be.
This section was designed in two colors: violet and cream. I will not be offended if you use creative license and invent new color schemes. I actually love seeing all the color combos that people’s creative minds can invent. Make them in purple, if you like, or let your imagination take flight and make your butterflies any color you choose. Just be sure to share your color combos on the FB group so we can all see what you came up with!
