I came up with the design for this hat many years ago after college when I had a lot of time on my hands before having my 3 lovely children. I had just learned how to make crochet cables and wanted to design a hat using them. I made up the pattern in my head and then kept making hats to give as Christmas gifts. Now it was time to actually write it down.
Writing the pattern down proved to be more difficult that I initially thought – especially during my postpartum haze after having my 3rd baby. AND because as I was working on my pattern, my aunt was diagnosed with brain cancer and passed away before testing was completed.
Initially, I wanted to make my hat purple in honor of gynecological cancer because I do donate a % of my sales to a pregnancy resource center, and women’s issues are something I am passionate about. But after my dear aunt was diagnosed with glioblastoma, I changed gears, pulled out my gray yarn and went to work!
My aunt was a very special lady and I wanted this design to be dedicated to her. I had planned to gift her my mock-up the next time I saw her, but I ran out of the yarn I was using, and before I could get to the store to buy more… she passed away. I never did purchase more of that yarn, but instead kept the hat as is. The hat was buried in the ground with her.
I love you Aunt Kerry and I hope this Cozy Cabled Beanie pattern can be made for many cancer patients in your honor.

When a row begins with Ch 1, the ch does not count as a st.
When the row begins with Ch 3, it does count as a st.
The pictures of the cabling are for reference only, as they show a 6 stitch cabling, this pattern is for a 4 stitch cabling.
The increase in Round 8 occurs between by working 4th dc and 3rd fptr in the same stitch. Round 11 is a repeat of Round 8 without the increase.
Reverse sc stitch is also referred to as the crab stitch.
The numbers in (parenthesis) at the end of each Round indicated the total number of stitches in that round.
There will be 8 total cables, each with 5 twists.
