Dogwood Mosaic Crochet Square – Free Pattern + Chart
Add a little springtime beauty to blankets and other projects with the Dogwood Square! This pretty blanket square pattern creates delicate dogwood blossoms using mosaic crochet, but don’t worry. It’s much simpler than it looks! With basic stitches and a clear chart, the flowers start to appear round by round as you stitch.

These delicate little blossoms aren’t just pretty. They carry some lovely symbolism, too. They’re often connected with renewal and resilience, since they bloom right as spring begins to wake everything up again. Stitching a square full of these little blossoms feels like a lovely reminder that new things are always growing, both in nature and in our crochet projects.

A Mosaic Crochet Granny Square Worked in the Round
The Dogwood Square is created with overlay mosaic crochet worked in the round, a technique that builds bold, graphic patterns by layering stitches over earlier rounds. Rather than crocheting into every stitch as usual, some stitches are worked down into the unworked front loop of the round below, creating the striking floral motif you see in the design.
If it looks a little intricate at first glance, don’t worry! It’s much simpler than it appears! The pattern is built from basic stitches arranged in a clever way, and once you get started the rhythm quickly makes sense. I’ve also included photo and video tutorials to guide you along the way.
Since this square is worked in the round, the yarn is carried from round to round instead of being cut each time. That means far fewer ends to weave in—and more time to sit back and enjoy watching the pattern bloom as you stitch.
Never tried this technique before? That’s OK! Watch my YouTube tutorial to learn more about how to do overlay mosaic crochet from the center out.

Pattern Notes
- Pattern is overlay mosaic crochet worked in the round from the center out. Watch this video to learn more about how to mosaic crochet from the center out. *Note: This video demonstrates the technique on another pattern but the basics are the same.
- Ch 1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
- If you tend to have loose tension when you crochet, you may need to go down a hook size or choose a light worsted weight yarn to make this an 12″ square.
- Sts between *asterisks* are repeated on each side of the square
- Each round (except Round 1) begins with the corner sts.
- The Corner stitches (BLOsc, ch1, BLOsc) are worked together into the BLO of the ch1 of the corner in the row below.
- Carry the unworked yarn under the first BLOsc of each corner, then drop the unworked yarn to the wrong side of the work and continue working.
- Work an invisible join after each round.
- A chart for this pattern is included as well.
