How have you been enjoying this year’s Bookmark Bonanza CAL? I can’t believe we’re nearly done! If you’ve caught on a bit late, that’s all right — you can grab yourself a copy of the Bookmark Bonanza CAL Pattern Bundle where each pattern comes with a video tutorial and a little book review.
I’ve loved seeing the creativity and different yarn types/colors used to make the bookmarks in my Facebook group and CAL group on Ravelry so feel free to share your versions as well. For the month of October, we’ll be crocheting the Granny Rectangle Bookmark as we read Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus.
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.
But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo.
Laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist.
Go ahead and grab yourself a copy on Amazon.

Different granny?
I love using this look in different techniques such as this Mosaic Granny Square! It’s made with the overlay mosaic technique and it’s such a cool combo of the granny square and another crochet method.
A granny pillow!
Using the classic pattern, I’ve made a neat pillow that can be a great stashbuster as well — my Granny’s 4-Square Pillow which you can make for free!
How about a wall hanging?
If you want to incorporate this stitch in your other home decor, here’s a pattern for a quick and easy Granny Wall Hanging that’s great for gifting too.
