Nordic Star – FREE Overlay Mosaic Crochet Chart – Mosaic Nordic Blanket CAL
I am so glad you are joining me for the Mosaic Nordic CAL hosted by me – Erin of Juniper & Oakes!
Welcome. (If you have no idea what I am talking about, click here. If you want to jump to the free chart, you’ll have to scroll to the bottom of this post.)
The fifth section in the CAL is the Nordic Star. This image, to me at least, very iconically “Nordic Winter/Christmas-y”. Don’t you think so too?
The Nordic Star reminds me of Chistmas & skiing & ugly Christmas sweaters specifically!
You can get the chart for this pattern for free down below. But If you want the complete pattern for the CAL , including written instructions, click here to purchase the ebook.
Including this design was very deliberate. Last year for the C2C version of the Nordic CAL, the Nordic Star was the fundamental square that the whole project was based on. I just knew I HAD to include it in the CAL this year.
The Mosaic Nordic CAL
If this CAL is new to you and you don’t know what I’m talking about. Here are the basics.
It is an overlay mosaic crochet blanket with 9 stripes.
This is a free crochet along from October 10th – December 19th, 2022.
It was designed by me and 7 other wonderful crochet designers (Crochet by Auntie K, Cindy’s Crochet Designs, Remington Lane Crochet, Simply Melanie Jane, Vanessa Croft, Sunflower Cottage Crochet, & High Desert Yarn.)
Each Monday a new section of the CAL will be released as a free overlay mosaic chart, which we will use to crochet up a new stripe to our blanket. If you don’t like to follow charts, there is an ebook with the complete blanket pattern you can purchase today.

Don’t have time to work this pattern now? Pin it for later.
A Q&A Video about this pattern.
I will be going Live on YouTube at 12pm EST on Monday November 7th to chat about the Nordic Star pattern & inspiration. I may have some other fun tidbits to share as well. I hope you watch live, and if not, then enjoy the replay!
What is Overlay Mosaic Crochet?
Overlay mosaic crochet is a technique that create beautiful designs using 1 color per row. Using sc in the back loops and a drop-down dc in the front loops of the stitches 2 rows below, you create these beautiful and intricate designs!
The tutorial includes helpful pictures and videos so that you will be well on your way to create this beautiful Mosaic Nordic Blanket and any other design that comes your way!
Full Pattern for the CAL
If you prefer to have written instructions for the whole blanket, you can purchase the CAL pattern ebook which will have the charts, written instructions, and cheat sheets for whole blanket pattern! You don’t have to wait week by week as the charts are released. You can get it all today!
5th Section:
Nordic Star
Let’s get started.
The Yarn
The yarn I used for this blanket is Wool Ease by Lion Brand.
This blanket was designed in two colors: Linen & Cranberry, but you can choose whatever colors you want! Get creative! Maybe you want to make each strip in a different color? Maybe you want to throw green in there somewhere. I will NOT get offended if you take creative liberties on the color scheme. Be sure to share pictures in the FB group so I can see what you come up with!
For the complete blanket I used:
- 2,285 yards of Color A (Linen – 12 Skeins)
- 2,025 yards of Color B (Cranberry – 11Skeins)
Purchase this yarn HERE
I know some of you will want to work your blanket up in other colors than the ones I used. Perhaps you’ll want each section worked up in their own colors.
For just this section of the CAL I used:
- 208 yards of Color A
- 170 yards of Color B
I hope this information is helpful to you!
The Hook
I used a size H (5.0 mm hook from Furls Crochet – a beautiful Cream-colored Streamline Swirl. Furls sent me this hook to use for the Monthly Mosaic Mystery crochet-along and I absolutely love it! I have spent actual dollars on these hooks, and I will keep on collecting them as well. Let me know if you have any questions about them – I would love to share my experience.

What it will look like at the end.
This is what mine looked like once I finished the 5th section.
How about yours? Please share pictures in the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community Facebook Page.
You should also share you pictures& videos on whatever social media you use! IG, FB, TikTok, YouTube? Wherever you share, can you please tag me @juniperandoakes? I’d love to see, share, & comment.
Remember…
DO NOT WEAVE IN YOUR ENDS!
Unless you really want to.
But the last section of the CAL will be to create an envelope border and we’ll HIDE the ends inside.
What now??
If you’ve finished crocheting up Section 5 before Section 6 comes out… well done! I love your work ethic. I know it took me about 10 minutes to crochet up EACH row of this blanket. That’s when I wasn’t chasing my toddlers around or searching my hook after loosing it in the couch cushions while I chased those toddler.
… but I digress.
If you’ve finished early and are anxiously waiting a new section, you have two options:
- Purchase the ebook and get instant access to ALL patterns right now!
- Check out the yearlong mosaic mystery CAL I am running as well. The Monthly Mosaic Mystery CAL has been ongoing throughout 2022. Each month I release a new pattern that was designed that month in honor of that month in some way, shape, or form. The CAL is very similar to the Mosaic Nordic CAL in that each section is a new strip in the blanket. The charts are free on the blog, or you can purchase the full pattern on Ravelry. The only difference is, the ebook only contains the patterns have have been released so far. The final look of the blanket is a mystery to even me, since I am designing as I go along.
My MMMCAL blanket so far.
If you browse through the J&O FB Group you’ll find pictures that will inspire your color choice for this blanket. There are some seriously creative crocheters. in my group!
