During the holidays, making gingerbread houses is a fun and festive way to excercise your creativity and show off your decorating skills. This mosaic crochet gingerbread house pattern allows you to have your gingerbread house and eat it, too!

You can work this gingerbread house pattern several times to make a whole Christmas blanket. Or combine it with other designs as part of a larger project, like the Gingerbread Mosaic Blanket CAL.

If you’re making the Gingerbread Mosaic Blanket, you’ll use this motif in section 6.

But here’s the basic info to get you started. We are all crocheting an heirloom Christmas blanket together over in the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community FB Group. Each Monday from September 16th through December 2nd, 2024, a new free blanket section pattern and chart will be released right here on my blog!

You’ll work this mosaic crochet gingerbread house pattern for section 6 of the Gingerbread CAL. But this yummy gingerbread house motif is just one of 5 gorgeous patterns that we’ll be combining to make this gorgeous Christmas afghan during Fall 2024!

This section features cozy gingerbread houses with little Christmas trees in between. The motif uses a 96-stitch repeat, which is a little bigger than the other graphs in this CAL.

But the decorative designs on the houses may feel familiar. They look an awful lot like the DooDads you’ve been making all throughout the blanket, don’t they? So it’s not entirely new territory. Anyway, by this point in the CAL you’ll be a boss at overlay mosaic crochet!

Instructions for the Mosaic Crochet Gingerbread House Pattern

Overlay Mosaic Crochet

This gingerbread blanket CAL uses the overlay mosaic crochet technique to create each section. This technique is easier than it looks and is super addictive! You’ll need to know how to make foundation single crochet (FSC), back loop only single crochet (BLOsc), and front loop only double crochet (FLOdc), as well as beginning and ending border stitches.

18 stitches x 22 rows = 4” x 4” in square

Size:

Approximately 45” x 58” (the full blanket)

How big will This Section be?

The answer depends on many factors: yarn, hook, tension, etc. If you work a gauge swatch in the pattern stitch and measure it, you can multiply that out to estimate the finished size of your blanket. Mine starts with a foundation row of 195 stitches and is and 7 rows high.

Beginning Border Stitch (BBS)

A standing sc through the post (or the ‘v’) of the stitch below, ensuring that both legs of the stitch on the WS are to the outside of the blanket. (For right-handed crocheters the legs would be secured to the right of the stitch and vice versa for left-handed crocheters.)

Back Loop Only Single Crochet (BLOsc)

Insert hook in back loop of indicated st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through both lps on hook. 

Front Loop Only Double Crochet (FLOdc)

Yo, insert hook in front loop of st below the indicated st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through two lps on hook, yo and draw through remaining two lps on hook.

Ending Border Stitch (EBS)

A sc through the post (or the ‘v’) of the stitch below, ensuring that both legs of the stitch on the WS are to the outside of the blanket. (Similar to BBS, but the back legs of the stitch are secured to the opposite side.)

Notes

• Pattern is worked from right to left on Right Side only.  (If you are left handed, feel free to work from left to right according to the chart below).
• Every row is worked in a different color.
• Fasten off at the end of each row. 
• Every row begins with a beginning border stitch. 
• Every row ends with an ending border stitch. 
• Each pattern begins with 1 border stitch, has a repeat of stitches, 1 stitch to even out the pattern, and 1 border stitch at the end. 
• You may choose to repeat the pattern as many times as you wish. Make sure your Foundation Row is made up of any multiple of 48 plus 3 extra stitches. I will be using 4 repeats. So my foundation row is (4×48) + 3 = 195 stitches.
• The patterns include a chart and written instructions below. You may want to refer to each. 
• The colors on the chart indicate how the finished project will look.
• The pattern can be worked up in two colors. Simply ignore any other color changes and alternate your Color A & B throughout.

This section was designed in two colors: cream and tan. But this versatile crochet house pattern could be worked in any color combo to create a fairytale cottage or a mountain cabin! I’m not offended when people come up with their own color schemes. I actually love seeing what you create, so be sure to share your color combos on the FB group so we can all see what you came up with!

The amount of yarn you will need depends on different factors like yarn weight, hook size, and tension. With the recommended yarn and hook, you will use approximately 2325 yards of Cream, 1290 yards of Palomino (warm golden tan), and 975 yards of Love Letter (deep red) to make the full Gingerbread Mosaic Blanket. Plus you’ll need a little extra of each color for the border.
