I’ll fill you in really quick. We are all creating an heirloom winter blanket together over in the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community FB Group. Each Monday and Thursday during October and November 2021, a new free blanket square chart or new section of the CAL will be released on my blog in blog hop fashion, as there are 10 other designers who helped make this blanket! Don’t worry, I’ll also send an email about it — just make sure you’re subscribed to my email.
Now we have three squares finished:
So I think it is about time to learn how to add a simple half-double crochet border around your squares in case you want to get started on that.
This is the method I used to add a simple border around all of my Nordic Winter Afghan C2C squares for the crochet along (CAL). You may choose a different method if you’d like. I’d love to see what you come up with. Please share about it in the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community (my Facebook group).
Can’t work this technique right now? Pin it for later!
After learning how to add a border to your squares, make sure you hop on over to the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community. You can ask questions, post pictures of your WIPs and finished squares, enter to win the giveaway prize, watch Live videos, and join our virtual Sip & Stitch. It will be a lot of fun!
If you don’t have Facebook, you can still participate in the CAL by creating your squares on your own. Definitely post pictures and share about the CAL on any social media you have. Be sure to tag me @juniperandoakes and use #NordicWinterC2CCAL so we can see your progress.
Don’t miss an update
I will be sending out an email each time a new design is released. You will be the first to be notified of the next part of the CAL or any other news. Sign up now!
How to add a HDC Border Around C2C Squares
Materials:
- Crochet blanket squares
- Yarn in a coordinating color
- Crochet hook (appropriate size for your yarn and squares)
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Yarn & Hook used in my tutorial:
The Yarn: Worsted
WeCrochet Swish Worsted (110y, 50g, 100% wool) or other light worsted yarn in two colors
Main Color: White
Contrast Color: Serrano
The Hook: 5mm
I used a H/5.00 mm Red & Nickel Odyssey hook from Furls Crochet to make my blanket. Furls sent me this hook for me to use for my holiday projects. It helps me feel festive as I work up my squares. This hook feels so good in my hands and the yarn slides easily across the nickel. If you have never tried a Furls hook, I suggest you head on over to their website and order one now.

Written Instructions
Note: The squares I am using are C2C using half-double crochet. Click here for my blog post on this technique, which includes a video tutorial a well.
Step 1
With your color of choice (I chose Color A, White). slip stitch to any space between a C2C tile/pixel/square of your project.
Step 2:
Work 2 half double crochet (hdc) stitches in each tile around.
on the side of a tile work 2 hdc in the ch 2 space
on the top of a tile, work 1 hdc into each of the middle two hdc stitches
don’t work any hdc between the tiles
Tip: If your C2C blanket square has 25 tiles, work 50 hdc stitches along the side.
Step 3:
In each corner, work hdc, ch 1, hdc (making sure to keep only 2 hdc per tile).
Step 4:
Continue around working 2 hdc per tile and hdc, ch 1, hdc in each corner.
Step 5:
Slip stitch to starting stitch to join!
Step 6:
Block and weave in your ends.
