What is a Crochet Along?
Have you ever participated in a Crochet Along before? If you haven’t done a CAL (or even heard of one) let me give you the basics. Essentially a Crochet Along (CAL) is an event where you crochet along with other people who are all making the same project. Each part of the pattern is released bit by bit, and everyone works at roughly the same pace.

How it will work.
The free version of the Frosted Windowpane CAL will be released in 2 sections, a mosaic crochet strip and a snowflake square, which we’ll work in different colors and arrange them to complete the final blanket. To find the free patterns, scroll down on this post until you see pictures of each square and press the button that says “Go to the free pattern.”
I’ll reveal the first section on October 12th and the second section on October 19th. Then, joining and border instructions will be available on November 16th.
I will send out an email to announce the release of each new section, or you can simply come to this page and click on the new design to be directed to the FREE pattern.
The first two sections of the Frosted Windowpane CAL will be offered for free (with ads) on the blog. However, the full experience—including the complete ad-free pattern collection, community, early access, and bonuses—lives inside the Crochet Collective.
Bonuses included inside the Collective:
- The complete ad-free pattern (2 different strips, 3 different squares, and mosaic crochet border) with written instructions + full mosaic charts
- A talk-through video with every section release
- Weekly progress threads and two live Q&As
- Sip & Stitch check-ins and our Finish Line Party
- Weekly progress giveaways and a finish-line grand prize (with hooks from Furls!)
If you love crocheting alongside others and having help when questions come up, this is the place for you.
Just want the eBook? You can purchase it from my shop (you will be able to add the pattern to your Ravelry library from there). 👇
If you are participating in the free version of the CAL, you can ask questions, share photos of your WIPs and finished squares in the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community. If you don’t have Facebook, you can still participate in the CAL by creating your blanket on your own. Definitely post pictures and share about the CAL on any social media you have. Be sure to tag me @juniperandoakes and use #FrostedWindowpaneCAL so we can see your progress.

Don’t miss an update.
I will be sending out an email each time a new design is released. You will be the first to be notified of the next part of the CAL or any other news. Sign up now!
The Schedule.
- Section 1 (Strip A) – October 12
- Section 2 (Square A) – October 19

Between the release of Section 2 and the joining and border instructions, you’ll have plenty of time to work on making multiples of each section, which you’ll then join into the finished afghan and frame with a striped border.
Written instructions for Section 1 (a mosaic crochet strip) and Square A (a snowflake square) will be offered free on the blog.
Scroll down to the bottom of the this page to find the picture of each new section.
If you’d like the pattern for the whole blanket, or prefer to work from written crochet charts, go ahead and join the Crochet Collective. You’ll also get community, early access, and other bonuses.
How Will my Blanket be?
That’s a great question! The answer may vary, depending on the your hook, yarn, tension, etc.
The blanket measures approximately 48″ x 64″ (unblocked).
This size makes generously-sized throw that’s perfect for snuggling under all winter long!
The Yarn
For my mosaic crochet snowflake blanket, I used Heartland by Lion Brand. This is a soft worsted weight 100% acrylic yarn that comes in dozens of beautiful heathered shades inspired by America’s national parks. I chose Acadia (cream), Redwood (red), and Rocky Mountains (green). But they have tons of rich colors to choose from, so you can find one to match your holiday decor.
If you want to make the blanket exactly as pictured in the mock-up above, I’ll provide some notes along with each section so you know how many of each to make in which color. But of course, you can use your creativity and make the blanket in any colors you like! I love seeing how people put their own spin on my patterns.
If you want to substitute another brand, just keep in mind that Heartland is on the lighter end for a medium-weight yarn so your gauge and the size of your finished blanket may vary.

The Hook.
I used a Furls Streamline Metal hook, size H/5.00 mm hook to make my blanket. These hooks are perfectly shaped to fit in my hand and they have a great weight to them. I can crochet for hours with no wrist pain, which is a game changer for me. If you have never tried a Furls hook, I highly recommend that head on over to their website and order one now.

I prefer to use an H hook. But we all have our tension and preferences. So ultimately, you should use whatever hook you’re comfortable using with your chosen yarn. Go up or down a hook size if needed to meet gauge. The mosaic crochet patterns in this blanket are easily adaptable by adding or subtracting rows.
What is overlay mosaic crochet?
To successfully complete this CAL, you’ll need to be familiar with mosaic crochet. If you’ve never heard of the technique before, that’s okay! Let me break it down for you.
Overlay Mosaic Crochet is a technique that requires you to work in the BLO (back loop only) and then drop down to pick up the front loop of stitches from previous rows (or rounds), which creates textured stitches that lay over the stitches from previous rows and can be used to create wonderfully intricate patterns.
The strips in this blanket are worked in rows, using just one color at a time. You’ll finish off each row and start the next row with the new color.
The squares in this blanket are worked from the center out, changing colors at the beginning of each round. Each new round consists of only ONE color, but with the use of the sc and drop down dc stitches, you get the mosaic design.
An added bonus when working mosaic crochet in the round is that instead of cutting off the yarn each round, you’ll be carrying it throughout the project. That eliminates most of the yarn ends which means less time spent weaving them in (yay)!
Some overlay mosaic patterns come with a chart. The symbols on the chart tell you when to use a dc and when to use the special drop down dc.
It seems complicated, but I promise, it’s super easy (and addictive) as you go. Not only that, but once you master overlay mosaic crochet, you’ll be able to create many of the most popular designs on this blog.
