Great Summer Mosaic CAL – Free Crochet Blanket Pattern
Looking for a crochet project filled with sunshine and nostalgia? Join us in Summer 2026 as we make a gorgeous summer mosaic crochet blanket together! In the Great Summer Mosaic CAL, we’ll create a cheerful afghan inspired by warm days, light breezes, and all the little joys of the season. It’s perfect for lounging on the lawn, packing for picnics, or bringing along for sunny beach days. Stitch along with us live, or come back to the pattern anytime you’d like to capture that easy summer feeling.

Celebrating Summer with a Mosaic Crochet Blanket
We’ve got Christmas covered with favorites like the Christmas in July CAL, the Mosaic Gingerbread Blanket CAL, and the Mosaic Nordic CAL. We’ve celebrated spring with the Mosaic Flower Garden CAL, explored every season in the Monthly Mosaic Mystery CAL, and made an all-season geometric blanket in the Mosaic in a Month CAL. But one thing was still missing—a blanket made just for summer. Until now, that is!
So this season, we’re embracing sunny days with a mosaic crochet blanket that reads like a summer scrapbook. I’ve teamed up with nine other talented designers, each contributing one overlay mosaic crochet design inspired by a favorite summer memory. Together, these motifs celebrate sunshine, beach days, blooming flowers, and our favorite summertime treats—blending into one cheerful, collected design.
Introducing the Great Summer Mosaic CAL!

What is a Crochet Along?
If you have never participated in a Crochet Along before, you may be thinking, “What on earth is she talking about? Basically, a Crochet Along (CAL) is an event where you crochet along with other people creating the same project. A each part of the pattern is released bit by bit, and you work at the same pace as other participants.

How it will work.

10 different designers (myself and 9 others) have designed 10 mosaic crochet afghan stripes. The chart for each design will be free on the designers’ blogs. To find the free charts, scroll down on this post until you see pictures of each section and press the button that says “Go to the free chart.”
Each section of the CAL will be released on Tuesdays and Fridays from June 2nd through July 3rd. Then, we’ll finish it all off with a border, to be released on July 6th.
I will send out an email to announce the release of each new design, or you can simply come to this page and click on the new design to be directed to the FREE chart for that new section.
If you prefer to have a downloadable version of the pattern instead, you can purchase the full pattern, which includes the mosaic crochet charts and written instructions for each section in a PDF.
After grabbing the chart for each new section, make sure you hop on over to the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community. You can ask questions, share photos of your WIPs and finished sections, and maybe even watch Live videos. It will be a lot of fun! If you don’t have Facebook, you can still participate in the CAL by creating your blanket on your own. Definitely post pictures and share about the CAL on any social media you have. Be sure to tag me @juniperandoakes and use #GreatSummerMosaicCAL so we can see your progress.

I will also be posting videos on YouTube! I already have a playlist for this CAL set up, and more videos will be added as they become available.

The Schedule.
Every Tuesday and Friday from June 2nd-July 3rd, a new part of the blanket will be released. Then, we’ll finish off with a border on July 6th.

How big will My blanket be?
That’s a great question! The answer will depend on many factors: yarn, hook, tension, etc.
My blanket is approximately 45” x 65″.
This size of blanket makes a nice small throw or lapghan.
Yarn for the Summer Mosaic Crochet Blanket

The yarn I used for this blanket is Brava Baby DK from Crochet.com. Brava DK is a super soft 100% acrylic yarn. This anti-pill yarn is machine washable and is designed to prevent fuzz. So feel free to spread it out on the beach or the lawn, knowing that you can wash away any spills and it will remain good as new! (Air drying flat is recommended).
This free summer mosaic crochet blanket pattern was designed in five vibrant, summery colors with a backdrop of white that ties the whole blanket together. Of course, you can use whatever colors you like for your blanket! I think it would look amazing in bright primary colors or beachy blues and tans. It’s up to you! One of the best parts of a CAL is seeing what creative color schemes my community comes up with! So be sure to share pictures in the FB group.
The amount of yarn needed depends on different factors like yarn weight, hook size, and tension. Based on those factors, your mileage (or should I say yardage?) may vary. However, for reference, my blanket used roughly 2457 yards of the white (color A) and 546 yards each of yellow (B), rose (C), sea green (D), peach (E), and orchid (F).
Altogether, that’s 9 skeins of White and 4 skeins each of Yellow, Rose, Sea Green, Peach, and Orchid. You can also get all the yarn you need for this blanket in one handy kit. Purchase that kit from Crochet.com, here.

The Hook.
I used a G/4.00 mm hook for the main blanket and an H/5.00 mm hook for the border. This combination of hooks is my preference for this project. But we all crochet differently, so you may prefer to use a different size. Choose whatever hook you’re comfortable using and that gives you the desired tension. Just be sure to make a swatch using the yarn & hook of your choice so you are not surprised by the size of your blanket.
The Great Mosaic Summer CAL Blanket
In the heat of summer, a cozy blanket might not be the first thing on your mind. But a sturdy crochet blanket made for sunny days is a different story altogether! Think less “curl up by the fire” and more “spread it out on the grass,” “take it to the beach,” or “keep it handy for picnics and outdoor concerts.” Summer blankets have a charm all their own, and this one is designed to be both beautiful and practical.
If you stitch along with the CAL schedule, you’ll have a durable summer mosaic crochet blanket ready to enjoy before the season slips away. Of course, you can always work at your own pace too. But having a group of friendly crocheters making it alongside you adds that extra bit of motivation—and makes the whole project even more fun.

What is overlay mosaic crochet?
I have written this whole post with the assumption that you all know what mosaic crochet means.
Overlay Mosaic Crochet is a technique that requires you to work in the BLO (back loop only) and then drop down to pick up the front loop of stitches from lower rows which creates textured stitches that lay over the stitches from previous rows and can be used to create wonderfully intricate patterns.
These patterns are worked in one direction only, fastening off the working yarn at the end of each row, and beginning again at the beginning of the piece — no turning involved. Each new row consists of only ONE color, but with the use of the sc and drop down dc stitches, you get the mosaic design. Most overlay mosaic patterns come with a chart. The symbols on the chart tell you when to use a dc and when to use the special drop down dc.
It seems complicated, but I promise, it’s super easy (and addictive) as you go.
Visit this blog post for a basic overview of the technique
Feel free to watch the video below to familiarize yourself a bit with the technique.

Pattern Notes
- Pattern is worked from right to left on Right Side only. (If you are left handed, feel free to work from left to right according to the chart below).
- Every row is worked in a different color.
- Fasten off at the end of each row.
- Every row begins with a beginning border stitch.
- Every row ends with an ending border stitch.
- Sc are worked in BLO of the previous row, unless otherwise noted.
- Dc are worked in FLO of stitch 2 rows below, skipping the stitch behind unless otherwise noted.
- You may choose to repeat the pattern as many times as you wish. Make sure your
- Foundation Row is made up of any multiple of 48 plus 3 extra stitches. I will be using 4 repeats. So my foundation row is (4×48) + 3 = 195 stitches).
- The patterns include a chart and written instructions below. You may want to refer to each.
- The colors on the chart indicate how the finished project will look.
- Please join the CAL group inside the Crochet Collective and share pictures and questions that arise.

Here is where the sections of the CAL will be located. Simply find the section you are looking for and click the “Go to the FREE chart” button below the picture. You will be taken to the designer’s website where they have their free mosaic crochet chart.
Note: the way we can offer this CAL for free is with ads on the blog. If you do not like the ads, you can purchase the ad-free, printable pattern in the ebook.
How do I add the next section??
Simply work Row 1 of the next section onto the last row of the previous section.
Just act as if the pattern continues like normal just with a new chart!
