Cheery Christmas Crochet Plaid Blanket Pattern – Free
Sure to keep you cozy this holiday season as you curl up by the fireplace with your mug of hot cocoa & a good book. This Christmas crochet plaid blanket pattern uses tapestry crochet to create a cheery, plaid blanket without using lots & lots of bobbins.
If you’ve always wanted to try tapestry crochet plaid but are intimidated by wrangling several colors at once, you should definitely try this Christmas crochet plaid blanket! Each row only uses two colors, which are carried throughout. So you don’t have to worry about bobbins. The entire throw is made in basic half double crochet stitches with simple color changes, which makes it great beginner tapestry crochet project!

The Yarn
For my Christmas crochet plaid blanket, I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in three colors: White, Scarlet (brighter red), and Cranberry (darker red). This affordable acrylic yarn is a little softer than your standard acrylic worsted yarn.
You can always change up the color scheme for this blanket, too. Instead of red, you can use can use a lighter and a darker shade of any color—gray and black, royal blue and navy … I always love to see what creative color combos people come up with!
I also used this yarn for the red and white version of the Cozy Alpine Stocking.

The Hook
The hook I used to work up this pattern was an H/5.0mm hook from Furls Crochet. I love the way these Streamline Hooks feel in my hand. I use my Furls hooks all the time and definitely recommend you try one for yourself!

Customization Tips
This blanket is simple to customize. I’ve provided several ideas on how to crochet this
blanket to fit your personality and comfort needs.
- Color: Work the blanket up in however many colors you wish. Choose one solid color. Work less repeats of Rows 2-9 and add more color stripes. Alternate colors however you choose. Feel free to get creative with your color scheme.
- Embellishments: Add pom poms or tassels to each corner or attach fringe along the edges.
- Border: Instead of the hdc border, try a picot border or a bobble stitch border.
Ready, Set… CROCHET!
