Piper’s Blankie – Free Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern
My baby girl Piper was born just over 2 months ago.
How can that have happened?
Time sure does fly when you have three kids, move into a new house, and try to maintain a side-hustle. Oofta! While I was pregnant with her, I crocheted her a baby blanket. I envisioned her as a girlie-girl type – one who would love the delicate textures of the stitches as well as the texture of the velvet yarn itself. I love the color purple, and knew that’s what I wanted to use, rather than a soft “baby pink” color. I found the most beautiful deep “Majestic Purple” velvet yarn at Michael. and fell in love!
Someday I will do a review of the Bernat Velvet yarn. I really do love the texture! Though I haven’t quite figured out what to do with the ends yet… They are a bit tougher to weave in than other yarns. Do you have any tips for me?
I found the stitches used in Piper’s Blankie by scrolling through Daisy Farm Craft’s “Stitches” Instagram account. Do you follow them? They post the most beautiful patterns (many of them baby blankets) on their main IG account. Their stitches account walks you through some amazing stitches. I go there a lot for inspiration. They are actually writing a book about their favorite crochet stitches and I am totally going to get it!

The Preemie Crochet Challenge 2021
Piper’s Blankie pattern was featured in August 2021 on the Preemie Crochet Challenge 2021 hosted by Sunflower Cottage Crochet. I was given the opportunity to provide it as a free download and I jumped at the chance!
You may not know this, but when I am not chasing my wild kids or wielding my Furls crochet hook, I am also a nurse! Up until the pandemic, I was a NICU nurse. Oddly during the first 6 months of the pandemic, there were hardly any babies in our NICU, and I found out I was pregnant with little Piper, and decided to be a SAHM. So this Preemie Challenge really hits home for me. I know the importance of providing soft, warm textures to a little one. I have seen the impact of a handmade gift given to scared, confused, broken parents in their biggest time of need.

Pattern Notes
US Terminology
Stitches between *asterisks* are repeated.
Color A is worked using the Even Moss Stitch. Color B is worked using the Moss Stitch. The border is worked using the Shell Stitch. Knowing these stitches may help in creating Piper’s Blankie. Click the links to watch videos by Daisy Farm Crafts.
Each color change should happen on the same side of the blanket. Instead of fastening off at each color change, I prefer to drop the yarn and pick it back up at the next color change. The extra yarn will be covered up by the border.
Although this pattern calls for two different colors of Bernat Velvet yarn, one of my testers used one color of a similar weighted yarn and look how beautiful it turned out!
Special Stitches
