More about the American Flag c2C Crochet Blanket

This 54 x 45-inch blanket is worked using the traditional corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet technique. If you’ve never tried C2C before, it’s a fun and satisfying way to create bold graphic designs in blankets, pillows, wall hangings, and so much more.

The traditional C2C stitch is made with simple double crochets, chains, and slip stitches. Each little “pixel” or “tile” consists of a ch 2 + 3 dc and each increase is ch 6 + 3 dc. These tiles are worked diagonally, increasing on one edge and decreasing on the other to create the rectangular blanket. As the tiles come together, you’ll gradually watch the American flag emerge one pixel at a time.

If that sounds a little intimidating, don’t worry! C2C crochet is much easier than it looks, and many crocheters find the repetitive rhythm wonderfully relaxing once they get started. Yarn Suggestions for C2C Crochet American Flag Blanket

For this blanket, I used Mighty Stitch Worsted, a medium (#4) weight yarn from Crochet.com. It’s an 80/20 superwash wool/acrylic blend that’s super soft and cozy. It’s also machine washable, which will keep your blanket looking great through every holiday celebration!

You can substitute any worsted weight yarn you prefer. Just keep in mind that different fiber content can affect the texture and drape of the finished blanket.

The Hook

For this blanket, I reached for my H/5.0 mm Streamline Metal hook from Furls Crochet. It’s one of the hooks I reach for again and again, especially for projects with lots of repetitive stitches like C2C. The comfortable shape and smooth metal finish make for an enjoyable stitching experience from the first block to the last.

Yes! While I probably wouldn’t recommend it as your very first crochet project, it’s a great choice if you’re comfortable with the basics and ready to learn a new technique. C2C crochet uses simple stitches, straightforward increases and decreases, and easy color changes. If you’re an adventurous beginner, I think you’ll do just fine!

Can I make this blanket in HDC C2C crochet?

Yes! The graph itself will work with any corner-to-corner crochet technique, including HDC C2C. Just keep in mind that half double crochet blocks are smaller than traditional C2C blocks, so your finished blanket will also be significantly smaller. Instead of a throw-sized blanket, you’ll end up with something closer to a crib blanket or lap blanket.

Before you begin, I recommend making a quick gauge swatch with your chosen yarn and hook, then plugging those measurements into this handy C2C blanket size calculator.
