Mosaic Squares Crochet Square – Free Pattern + Chart
Ready to work on a new mosaic crochet square pattern, or even take on your first mosaic project? You may have spotted this motif in the Monthly Mosaic Mystery CAL, the coaster or the plant pot holder. But now weโre working this fun geometric design in a way youโve never seen it beforeโin the round from the center out. Meet the Mosaic Squares Square!

Fun to say and even more fun to crochet, this geometric design has such a satisfying sense of structure and order, each round neatly built on the last, stacking into clean lines and balanced shapes. Itโs the kind of pattern that keeps you engaged while still feeling approachable, perfect for adding a little modern charm to your blanket.

A Mosaic Crochet Granny Square Worked in the Round
The Mosaic Squares Crochet Square pattern is worked in overlay mosaic crochet in the round, a technique that creates intricate-looking designs by working some stitches over previous rounds. Instead of crocheting through both loops as usual, you’ll work single crochets in the back loop only. Then you’ll work some double crochet stitches into the unused front loops of stitches from the round below. Those drop-down stitches form the design.
At first glance, mosaic crochet may seem complicated, but I promise it’s easier than it looks! This pattern uses simple single and double crochet stitches, combined in a clever way. Once you find your rhythm, this technique will start to feel natural. You may even find it hard to put this project down!
Since this square is worked in the round, youโll carry your yarn as you go rather than cutting it at the end of each round. The benefit is very few ends to weave in, leaving you more time to relax and watch the design emerge.
If this is your first time trying overlay mosaic crochet, youโre in the right place! Be sure to check out my YouTube tutorial for a step-by-step look at working this technique from the center out.

Pattern Notes
- Pattern is overlay mosaic crochet worked in the round from the center out. Watch this video to learn more about how to mosaic crochet from the center out. *Note: This video demonstrates the technique on another pattern but the basics are the same.
- Ch 1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
- If you tend to have loose tension when you crochet, you may need to go down a hook size or choose a light worsted weight yarn to make this a 12″ square.
- Sts between *asterisks* are repeated on each side of the square
- Each round (except Round 1) begins with the corner sts.
- The Corner stitches (BLOsc, ch1, BLOsc) are worked together into the BLO of the ch1 of the corner in the row below.
- Carry the unworked yarn under the first BLOsc of each corner, then drop the unworked yarn to the wrong side of the work and continue working.
- Work an invisible join after each round.
- A chart for this pattern is included as well.
