Celtic Knot Mosaic Crochet Square – Free Pattern + Chart
Ready to try something that looks impressive but is surprisingly simple? This mosaic crochet square features a stunning Celtic knot design, created using basic stitches and an easy-to-follow method. Iโll walk you through the process so you can stitch with confidence as you work through the free chart.

Inspired by the timeless Irish knot, this squareโs interwoven lines symbolize connection and continuity. It feels especially fitting around St. Patrick’s Day, but its meaning carries beautifully throughout the year as we stitch in community. This square is designed to fit seamlessly into the Mosaic Grannies Collection, while shining on its own.

A Mosaic Crochet Granny Square Worked in the Round
The Celtic Knot Square is worked using overlay mosaic crochet in the round, a technique that creates bold, graphic designs by layering stitches over previous rounds. Instead of working into every stitch as usual, select stitches are dropped down and worked over the round below to form the intricate-looking knot pattern.
It may seem a little complex, but this technique is so much easier than you may think! Itโs built from simple stitches worked in a clever way. Once you start, it all clicks. And I’ve provided photos and video tutorials to help you along!
Because this square is worked in the round, youโll also carry your yarn as you go rather than cutting it at the end of each round. That means far fewer ends to weave inโand more time to enjoy watching the design unfold (always a win!).
Never tried this before? That’s OK! Watch my YouTube tutorial to learn more about how to do overlay mosaic crochet from the center out.

Pattern Notes
- Pattern is overlay mosaic crochet worked in the round from the center out. Watch this video to learn more about how to mosaic crochet from the center out. *Note: This video demonstrates the technique on another pattern but the basics are the same.
- Ch 1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
- If you tend to have loose tension when you crochet, you may need to go down a hook size or choose a light worsted weight yarn to make this an 12″ square.
- Sts between *asterisks* are repeated on each side of the square
- Each round (except Round 1) begins with the corner sts.
- The Corner stitches (BLOsc, ch1, BLOsc) are worked together into the BLO of the ch1 of the corner in the row below.
- Carry the unworked yarn under the first BLOsc of each corner, then drop the unworked yarn to the wrong side of the work and continue working.
- Work an invisible join after each round.
- A chart for this pattern is included as well.
