Mosaic Hearts Hat – Free Crochet Pattern
The Mosaic Hearts Hat is just right when you’re craving a quick crochet project that still feels extra special. It’s fun to stitch, easy to wear, and makes a sweet handmade hat for chilly winter days or anytime you want to add a little warmth (and love) to someone’s wardrobe. 💖
This mosaic crochet hat is worked in the round with a simple heart design that keeps things interesting without feeling overwhelming. A pom pom on top adds a bit of playful personality. Whether worn solo or with the matching scarf, it’s a fun and satisfying make.

The Overlay Mosaic Crochet Technique
The Mosaic Hearts Hat is worked using overlay mosaic crochet, which gives you that gorgeous colorwork look without the hassle of managing lots of yarn at once. This technique that requires you to work in the back loop only (BLO) and sometimes drop down to pick up the front loop of stitches from lower rounds. This creates textured stitches that lay over the stitches from previous rounds and can be used to create intricate-looking patterns.
You’ll be working this hat with mosaic crochet in rounds. Even though you’re changing colors each round, there are very few ends to weave in. Instead of fastening off after each round, simply drop the non-working yarn to the inside of the hat and pick up the new color.
If you end up falling in love with mosaic crochet—and I hope you do!—you can confidently take on a larger project, like the Mosaic Flower Garden Blanket or the Monthly Mosaic Mystery CAL (which features a section of hearts). This pattern is also ideal for those who are seasoned in mosaic crochet and are looking for a quick make.

The Mosaic Hearts Hat is just one of a whole collection of mosaic crochet heart patterns that I have designed. Once you try one, there’s a good chance you’ll want to make them all!

Yarn Suggestions for the Mosaic Crochet Hearts Hat
For the Mosaic Hearts Hat, I used Lion Brand Heartland yarn. Heartland is a super-soft acrylic yarn. It comes in a whole bunch of gorgeous colorways, each inspired by a national park. The heathered colors look oh so cozy!
You can also substitute any other worsted weight (#4 weight) yarn you like! Either way, you’ll need about 200 yards each of two contrasting colors.

The Hook
For this pattern, I reached for my H/5.0mm Streamline Metal hook from Furls Crochet. These are my top-rated crochet hooks for quick mosaic projects. They feel so good in the hand, and the yarn just glides effortlessly across that sleek metal finish.
Furls is always releasing gorgeous new colors, too. Pop over to their website to see what’s fresh and maybe treat yourself to a new hook while you’re there!
And remember, everyone crochets a little differently. You might find that another hook works better for your tension, and that’s totally fine. I always recommend making a quick swatch with your chosen yarn and hook so you know exactly what to expect for size and gauge.

2025 Hat of the Month Club CAL
The Mosaic Hearts Hat was featured in the Hat of the Month Club CAL in December 2025. In this year-long event, 13 talented crochet designers came together and shared 3 new hat patterns and 3 new hat patterns each month throughout the year. I’m thrilled to share one of December’s featured hat patterns!
The Winter Puff Stitch Hat from Oombawka Design and the Blue Moon Beanie from The Stitchin’ Mommy! were also featured in December.

Pattern Notes
- Stitches between *asterisks* are repeated.
- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- This pattern uses the overlay mosaic technique. If unfamiliar, be sure to watch my video tutorials.
- Every round is worked in a different color. Instead of fastening off after each round, I prefer to drop the yarn on the WS (inside) and pick it back up for next time.
- Every round begins with a ch-1 as the “beginning border stitch.”
- Every round ends with sl st to the ch-1 from the beginning of the round as the “ending border stitch.”
- Each round begins with 1 border stitch (ch 1) , has a repeat of 8 stitches, and 1 border stitch (sl st) at the end.
- You may choose to repeat the pattern as many times as you wish. Make sure your foundation row is made up of any multiple of 8 stitches.
- The free-on-the-blog version of this pattern includes written instructions only. Purchase the premium pattern on Ravelry or Etsy for the mosaic crochet chart.
- If you prefer to make a different size:
- Wider/Narrower: Add/subtract FSC stitches.
- Taller/shorter: Add/subtract rounds.
- Be sure to just work more or less repeats as needed.

It is 11:00 pm EST, 12-28-25 and the code MOSAICHAT is not working on Ravelry. It looks like it should still be available. Am I doing something wrong? I tried both copy and paste and typed it in directly and neither worked. It told me it was not a valid coupon.

Hi Erin,
I was just trying the coupon code for the hat and it said it was an invalid code. I copied the code directly from this page, and when it didn’t work I even tried putting a space between them just in case but that didn’t work either. I was wondering if you could help me out.
The hat looks fantastic and I would love to get the pdf, although I missed the free pdfs for the scarf and the washcloth I will definitely be using the free versions here on your site when I get the chance to grab some yarn&make them. But having the pdf for one of the three would be nice.
Any help is very much appreciated.
Thank you for any help and for all the wonderful patterns.
I hope you&your family&friends are all safe happy&healthy going into the new year and that you had a good holiday season.
Sincerely,
Liz
