Peaks & Pillars Mosaic Afghan Strip – Monthly Mosaic Mystery CAL – FREE Chart
I am so glad you are joining me for the 2022 Monthly Mosaic CAL hosted by me – Erin of Juniper & Oakes! Welcome. (If you have no idea what I am talking about, click here.)
Have you ever crocheted a mosaic pattern?
I had never done one until I designed this Peaks & Pillars afghan strip for the Friends Around the World CAL. I have since turned this simple afghan square into a trivet pattern and pillow pattern.
And now I am using it as the basis of my first strip in my Monthly Mosaic CAL. I know, I know. It’s the LAST day of the year and I am FINALLY launching my monthly blanket CAL. This idea has been rolling around in my head, and I’m finally going to just start!
But in true J&O fashion, the idea and promotion of this blanket is happening WAY faster than the actual making of the blanket in real life. I have yet to make the official blanket strip for the CAL, so I will be using my FATW6 sample strip to promote until I have the first part of my blanket finish. I hope that’s OK. wink

What is the Monthly Mosaic CAL
To start off with, CAL is the abbreviated form of Crochet Along. It’s when many people crochet the same project together.
This CAL will be a blanket using the overlay mosaic technique. Every month in 2022, I will be releasing an afghan strip that is abstractly inspired by that month. Each pattern will be released near the end of that month. Typically, you will receive a free chart for the pattern with a link to another blog post that walks you through how to read the mosaic chart. Since it has yet to be published, this pattern will include the written instructions as well.
Full Pattern for the CAL
If you prefer to have written instructions for the whole blanket, you can purchase the CAL pattern bundle which will have the charts, written instructions, and cheat sheets for this blanket CAL as they are released. For example, if you are purchasing the bundle in January 2022, there will only be one blanket strip released (this one), so only the chart + written instructions for the Peaks & Pillars pattern will be available, and then the next month you will gain access to that month’s pattern and so on. If you are purchasing the bundle in December 2022, all of the patterns will be available right away. Make sense?
Peaks & Pillars Mosaic Afghan Strip for my Monthly Mosaic CAL
I want all the mosaic patterns in my Monthly Mosaic CAL to be an abstract representation of that month somehow. This month (January 2022) I am using the Peaks & Pillars strip. The Peaks & Pillars Mosaic Afghan Strip is a beginner-friendly overlay mosaic crochet pattern. I am a hiker who loves the mountains, so I wanted to design something with a mountain feel. As this was my first mosaic crochet pattern, it needed to be simple yet detailed because I have yet to design anything too straightforward.
This strip is a fabulous representation to the beginning of a New Year.
I think many of us can agree that 2020 was a hard year, and 2021 was similar if not harder. We tend to have hope that the next new year will be BIGGER and BETTER than the one before. But, if we pause, reflect, and be honest —- it would probably be a healthier mindset to believe that this year will have HIGHS and it will have LOWS, and that’s normal. I hope that when you look at this strip in years to come you will be able to think fondly of the highs of this year, hold your lows lightly, and remember the lessons you learned along the way.
Wow, that was deep!
Let’s get started.

Pattern Notes
US Terminology
Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
This pattern uses the overlay mosaic technique. If unfamiliar, be sure to watch my video tutorial. (Also refer to Tinna & Daisy Knots, as they are my mosaic crochet gurus).
Pattern is worked from right to left on Right Side only. (If you are left handed, feel free to work from left to right according to the chart below).
Every row is worked in a different color.
Fasten off at the end of each row.
Every row begins with a sc through both loops as a “border” stitch.
Every row ends with a sc through both loops as a “border” stitch.
SC are worked in BL only of previous row.
DC are worked in FL only of stitch 2 rows below, skipping the stitch behind unless otherwise noted.
Pattern begins with 1 border stitch, has a repeat of 12 stitches, 1 stitch to even out the pattern, and 1 border stitch at the end.
You may choose to repeat the pattern as many times as you wish. Make sure your Foundation Row is made up of any multiple of 12 plus 3 extra stitches.
You may choose to make your Foundation Row the traditional way by chaining, then adding your sc on top. Be sure to make one additional chain than the number of stitches needed for your project.
This pattern includes a chart and a video below. You may want to refer to each. (Charts for 48 + 3 stitches AND the simpler 12+3 repeat included).
You can click here to the written instructions for free as part of the FATW6-CAL.
Although the chart included is for a foundation row of 48+3, we will be using a foundation row of 144 + 3 (or 147 stitches).
For the sake of the Monthly Mosaic CAL, crochet 20 Rows, though you may wish to keep going if you choose.
Here is the link to the video tutorial for this pattern. (or you can simply watch below)
*Note: the video walks you through my Trivet pattern, which is the same pattern, but just fewer stitches per row. and I added an envelope border to each side to cover the ends.*
