- Yarn: Medium (4) Worsted weight (approximately 140 yards)
- I used Paintbox Simply Aran
- Hook: H/8 – 5.0mm
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Gauge
1 Square = 12″ blocked
Finished Size
Approximately 12″ x 12″ blocked
Stitch Abbreviations (US Terminology)
- ch – Chain
- dc – Double Crochet
- fpdc – Front Post Double Crochet
- mc – Magic Circle
- sc – Single Crochet
- sk – Skip
- sl st – Slip Stitch
- st – Stitch
- yo – Yarn Over
Pattern Notes
- Stitches between *asterisks* are repeated.
- This pattern is worked in the round.
- Each round ends with a sl st to the first st to join.
- Do not turn at the end of each round.
- When a round starts with a ch 1, it does not count as a stitch.
- When a round starts with a ch 3, it does count as a stitch.
- If finished square is too large or too small to meet 12″, simply add or removes rounds according to the repeat.

Round 1: 8 sc in mc, sl st to first st to join. (8 sc)
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same, 2 dc in each around. (16 dc)
Round 3: Ch 3, dc in next 2, *ch 1, dc in same, dc in next 4, * repeat from * around, ensuring all sides have 5 dc. (20 dc)
Round 4: Ch 3, dc in same, 2 dc in each st around, in each corner: [ 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc], then skip the first st after each corner. (48 dc)
Round 5: Ch 3, fpdc around next, *dc, fpdc* until chain sp, in each corner: [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc]. (40 dc, 24 fpdc)
Round 6: Ch 1, fpdc around first, dc in next, *fpdc, dc* until ch sp, in each corner: [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc]. (48 dc, 32 fpdc)
Round 7: Ch 3, 2 dc in 1st, *sk 1, sl st, sk 1, 5 dc,* around, in each corner: [5 dc + skip an extra st], ending with 2 dc in 1st st to complete the shell. (20 5-dc clusters/”shells”)
Round 8: Ch 1, sc in 1st, *sk 2, 3 dc, sk 2, sc*, around, in each corner: [3 sc (worked on top of the 3rd dc from the corner shell)], ending with 3 dc and a sl st to first sc to join. (20 3-dc clusters)
Round 9: Ch 3, dc in next, *2 dc in next (will be 2nd st of middle cluster of the side), dc in next 10 sts, in each corner: [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc], dc in next 10 st*, around . (104 dc)
Round 10: Ch 3, fpdc around next, *dc, fpdc* until ch sp, in each corner: [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc]. (68 dc, 52 fpdc)
Round 11: Ch 1, fpdc around 1st, dc in next, *fpdc, dc* until ch sp, in each corner: [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc]. (76 dc, 60 fpdc)
Round 12: Repeat Round 10. (84 dc, 68 fpdc)
Round 13: Repeat Round 11. (92 dc, 76 fpdc)
Round 14: Ch 1, sc in 1st and in each st around, in each corner: [3sc]. (180 dc)
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
