Simple Mesh Mug Rug – FREE Crochet Pattern (Coffee Coasters)
As Springtime approaches and the cold-weather crocheting slows down, it’s great to have a quick & easy pattern on the ready to make when you have some time to crochet, but don’t want a big heavy blanket as a WIP.
Am I right?

Materials:
Yarn: Wander by Furls Crochet, medium #4 yarn (100% acrylic; 251 yds/230 m per 5 oz/142 g skein
- 1 skein Tundra (Color B)
1 skein Sandbar (Color C)
- Or any #4/worsted weight yarn in 2 colors
- Appx 40 yards of each color
Hook J/10 – 6.0 mm (I used my Furls Streamline Swirl – Supernova Hook)
- Adjust hook to meet gauge
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Gauge:
16 st x 9 rows = 4” x 4” square (not blocked)
Stitch used to obtain gauge = mesh stitch as described below
Finished Size:
Coaster: 4 inches x 4.5 inches
Mug Rug: 4 inches x 6.5 inches
Stitch Abbreviations (US Terminology)
ch – Chain
sc – Single Crochet
sk – skip
sl st – slip stitch
Special Stitches
Mesh: Stitch pattern made using Rows 1-7. (Chain any even number. In 2nd ch from hook, sc, *ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch* repeat across, ending with sc in last ch. Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc of previous row, *ch 1, sk ch space, sc in next sc* repeat across, ending with sc in last sc of previous row.)
Pattern Notes
- US Terminology
- When a row begins with Ch 1, the ch does NOT count as a st.
Make 4 coasters per set, 2 with Color A as the main color and the other 2 with Color B as the main color.
With Color A, Ch 18
Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook, sc, *ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch* repeat across, ending with sc in last ch.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc of previous row, *ch 1, sk ch space, sc in next sc* repeat across, ending with sc in last sc of previous row.
Rows 3-14: Repeat Row 2.
Border for Coaster: With Color B sc evenly around coaster working 1 sc in each stitc, 3 sc in each corner, and 1 sc in each row along the sides. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Fringe for Mug Rug:
1. Cut 31 strands of Color B approximately 3 inches in length.
2. Group 2 strands together.
3. Fold in half.
4. Feed fold through 1st st of the row along the short side of work.
5. Tuck ends through fold and pull tight.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 in every other row along the short side.
7. Trim fringe if necessary.
