Mosaic Crochet Flower Garden Blanket – Free Crochet Along (CAL)
Come with me on a crochet journey to create a stunning heirloom mosaic crochet flower blanket that will be passed down through generations. Designed for adventurous beginners, the Mosaic Flower Garden CAL uses the overlay mosaic crochet technique to easily craft intricate-looking colorwork designs without the hassle of yarn tangling or endless ends to weave in.

A Mosaic Crochet Flower Blanket for Spring
Christmas blankets are popular around here! Perhaps you were part of the Mosaic Gingerbread CAL in 2024. But it’s not all about Christmas. I like to mix it up with some blankets that you can use year-round. To that end, I’ve recently run the Mosaic in a Month CAL and the Rainbow Stitch Sampler Blanket CAL. And of course, this beautiful Springtime heirloom blanket, the Mosaic Flower Garden Blanket CAL!
The Mosaic Flower Garden Blanket is an overlay mosaic crochet pattern that was originally released as a Crochet Along in April 2024. We had so much fun the first time around that we’re running it again—this time with a free option on the blog!
Re-Introducing the Mosaic Flower Garden Blanket CAL!

What is a Crochet Along?
Have you ever participated in a Crochet Along before? If not, I think you’re going to love it! If CALs are a new thing for you, let me give you the basics. Essentially a Crochet Along (CAL) is an event where you crochet along with other people who are all making the same project. Each part of the pattern is released bit by bit, and everyone works at roughly the same pace.

How it will work.

The Mosaic Flower Garden Blanket pattern will be released in 10 parts, the last of which is the border. To find the free patterns with charts, scroll down on this post until you see pictures of each section and press the button that says “Go to the free pattern.”
Each section of the CAL will be released on Fridays and Tuesdays, from May 2nd through May 30th. Then, we’ll tie it all together with a border, which I’ll release on June 2nd.
I will send out an email to announce the release of each new design, or you can simply come to this page and click on the new design to be directed to the FREE pattern and chart for that new section.
If you prefer to have a downloadable pattern, all together in one place, you can purchase the full pattern, which includes the mosaic crochet pattern charts and written instructions for each section in a PDF. This pattern is yours to keep and print. This also allows you to work ahead, if you like!

Inspiration from Your Fellow Crocheters
Looking for inspiration? Here are some of the beautiful Mosaic Flower Garden Blankets completed by other crocheters in the Juniper & Oakes Facebook Group. I love seeing all the different ways people interpreted this pattern! As you can see, you don’t even have to make the full-sized blanket. Feel free to take the designs and make something entirely your own!
The Schedule.
Every Friday and Tuesday, May 2nd-June 3rd, a new part of the mosaic crochet flower blanket will be released.
Each new section will be offered as a free written pattern and chart on the blog.
Scroll down to the bottom of the this page to find the picture of each new section.
If you want to work at your own pace, or you’d prefer not to click through to each section, go ahead and purchase the full blanket pattern ebook. This will give you instant access to all of the written patterns and charts for each part of the blanket.
How big will my Mosaic Flower Garden blanket be?
That’s a fantastic question! The answer may vary, depending on the your hook, yarn, tension, etc.
My finished blanket is approximately 58” x 66” inches.
This size makes a decent-sized throw to drape over a chair or back of your couch to add a touch of Springtime to any room, all year long!
The Yarn.
The yarn I used for this blanket is Mary Maxim Maximum Value, a soft worsted weight acrylic yarn that can be machine washed and dried. You can feel comfortable taking this along on a picnic, knowing it will still look beautiful after washing off any food spills. The colors and yardage I used are as follows:
- Cottonwood (Color A) – 2515 yards/6 skeins
- Medium Green (Color B) – 860 yards/2 skeins
- Yellow (Color C) – 300 yards/1 skein
- Medium Violet (Color D) – 555 yards/2 skeins
- Medium Rose (Color E) – 300 yards/1 skein
- Medium Denim (Color F) – 300 yards/1 skein
Want to make it easy? You can also purchase all of the yarn you need for this blanket from Mary Maxim in one convenient kit! Use the button below to purchase the kit. 👇
This mosaic crochet flower blanket was designed in beautiful springy pastel shades. But I won’t be offended if you want to mix it up! This blanket can easily become a stash-buster, using a rainbow of random skeins you already have. Whatever creative color scheme you come up with, be sure to share pictures in the FB group so we can all see what you came up with!
Yarn Substitutions
If the kit & the yarn are currently out of stock, here are some alternatives you can try.
- Brava Worsted (100% acrylic) $
- Swish Worsted (100% fine superwash merino wool) $$$
- Others are using Red Heart Super Saver
- Or simply look at Yarn Sub & make your own choice. Get creative!
The Hook.
I used an H/5.00 mm hook for the body of the blanket and a G+/4.5 mm hook for the border. I love this Gemini Streamline Zodiac Crochet Hook from Furls Crochet. I love how this hook feels in my hand. The ergonomic design allows me to crochet away without wrist or palm pain and the yarn moves with ease from the hook while working up your stitches. And the overall look is so unique!
I have plenty of hooks from Furls that I think were fabulous investments. If the Gemini hooks are sold out, another great alternative are the Laurel Streamline Wooden Hooks by Furls Fiberarts.
I prefer to use an H hook for the sections and a G+ hook for the border. But we all have our preferences. So ultimately, you should use whatever hook you’re comfortable using with your chosen yarn. If you want an accurate estimate for the size of your blanket, be sure to make a gauge swatch using the yarn & hook of your choice.
What is overlay mosaic crochet?
To successfully complete this CAL, you’ll need to be familiar with mosaic crochet. If you’ve never heard of the technique before, that’s okay! Let me break it down for you.
Overlay Mosaic Crochet is a technique that requires you to work in the BLO (back loop only) and then drop down to pick up the front loop of stitches from lower rows which creates textured stitches that lay over the stitches from previous rows and can be used to create wonderfully intricate patterns.
These patterns are worked in one direction only, fastening off the working yarn at the end of each row, and beginning again at the beginning of the piece — no turning involved. Each new row consists of only ONE color, but with the use of the sc and drop down dc stitches, you get the mosaic design. Most overlay mosaic patterns come with a chart. The symbols on the chart tell you when to use a dc and when to use the special drop down dc.
It seems complicated, but I promise, it’s super easy (and addictive) as you go. Not only that, but once you master overlay mosaic crochet, you’ll be able to create many of the most popular designs on this blog.

Are ever going to offer the Garden Mosaic for free to people who can’t afford it. I realize $10.99 is a steal but I’m on disability and funds are low.
Yes, I plan to offer it as a free CAL next Spring. Thanks for your understanding.
I bought this pattern, but only received the written instructions. Can you tell me how to find the chart, video, etc.
Love your patterns.
Thank you
Hi Phyllis. Please email [email protected] and I can help you more.
Hi! This is a beautiful blanket! Does the pattern come with reversible instructions?
This one does not have reversible instructions yet.
Hi – I was very intrigued by this blanket. I wanted to join, but this CAL was done in 2024? Is there anything else coming out this month? I know nothing about Mosaic Crochet except that it’s beautiful. Thank you
Hi Candice – I will be hosting the same CAL again starting mid-April. Or you can just purchase the full pattern now.
Please can you tell me if this pattern has the reversible stitch?
I wish to make a super king size, does it say how many stitches for this size and how much wool please?
Hi. Currently it doesn’t have a reverse stitch included. Is it something that you’d be interested in?
Hi Erin
It’s a beautiful blanket. I click of the sunflower pattern, but I’m not able to get to the free pattern and charts. Could it be that they’re not available yet, or am I doing something wrong?
There isn’t a chart or instructions for section 9. No go to pattern button.
I would like to make the flower garden blanket but can’t get any of the links to load.. would it be possible to email me a link? Thank you.
Hi Brenda,
I’m so glad you decided to join the CAL. All of the pattern information is here on the blog: https://juniperandoakes.com/blog/mosaicflowergarden-crochetalong/
You may need to try a different browser. Some browsers don’t support that many files.
I hope this helps.
Happy Crocheting!
