How to Crochet the Spumoni Stitch (Puff + Mesh Stitch) – Free Tutorial
If you’ve ever tried spumoni (the frozen desert) you’ll know that its deliciousness comes from its unique combination of flavorsโpistachio, cherry, and chocolate. Similarly, the Spumoni Stitch (a Juniper & Oakes signature stitch!) uses a mix of stitches and textures that work together beautifully. Try this fun stitch tutorial and see what happens when you combine the crochet puff stitch with the mesh stitch!

The Magic of Mixing crochet Stitches
There are so many fascinating crochet stitch patterns you can use to add texture to your projects. But when it comes down to it, just about any stitch pattern you can imagine uses the same handful of basic crochet stitches. The real fun comes in when you start putting these basic stitches together in different ways.
Enter the The Spumoni stitch, a combination of several rows of Mesh Stitches followed by a row of 9 loop Puff Stitches. This results in richly-textured horizontal stripes.

When you look at that Porch ‘n Picnic Blanket, you can see why the stitch combination is called Spumoni! Look at how those colors match the desert. When publishing that pattern, I asked a group of friends what I should call it, and one of them told me Spumoni. LOL! and the nickname stuck!

Choosing the right yarn & hook
This yarn I used for this tutorial is Amigo by Hobbii. This DK-weight acrylic comes in over 50 brilliant colors! But of course, the yarn weight and hook size you choose will depend on your project and how it will be used.
No matter what yarn weight you choose, you will definitely want something with good stitch definition that shows off the gorgeous texture of the stitches. Avoid fuzzy or furry yarns. Also, light or bright colors catch the highlights and shadows and work better for showing off textures than dark ones.
Match your hook size to the yarn you choose. You may need to make a swatch or two to figure out which size gives you the desired tension. I love the Streamline Laurel Wooden hook from Furls Crochet, which comes in sizes F/3.75mm through P/10mm. I use Furls hooks often and highly recommend you try them out!

Written Tutorial for the Spumoni Stitch (Crochet Puff + Mesh Stitch)
Below you will find step-by-step instructions for creating the Spumoni Stitch.
Notes
- CH 1 the beginning of the row does NOT count as a stitch.
- CH 2 and CH 3 COUNT as a stitch.
- If you are making this as part of the Rainbow Blanket CAL, the stitch counts get confusing in this section. Adjust back to 132 STS when working the HDC rows of next section.
If you use these instructions exactly as written, you will create Section 2 of the Rainbow Blanket CAL. To use this stitch pattern in another project, ignore the color changes and row/stitch counts. Adjust the length of your starting chain and row counts to achieve your desired measurements. Use an even number of foundation stitches.
