Christmas in July Mosaic Crochet Blanket Pattern – Free CAL
Are you longing for cooler days, for festive holiday celebrations, and making cozy memories? Join us in July 2025 as we work this beautiful free mosaic crochet Christmas blanket pattern together!
Time to get Started on Your Christmas Crocheting!
Can you ever have too many Christmas blankets? Well, if my crochet community is any indication, maybe not! So far, I’ve hosted four Christmas CALs, including the popular Gingerbread CAL. I’ve even run some of them, like the Nordic Winter Blanket C2C CAL, more than once! But people still keep asking, “When are you releasing another Christmas blanket?”
So this summer, myself and 7 other designers have come together to create another stunning mosaic crochet Christmas blanket and I’m hosting it as a free CAL! Each of us have contributed a beautiful Christmassy design that celebrates a beloved holiday memory, from decorations, to food, to the winter landscape!
Introducing the Christmas in July Mosaic Crochet Blanket CAL!

What is a Crochet Along?
If you have never participated in a Crochet Along before, you may be wondering what in the world I am talking about. A Crochet Along (CAL) is essentially an event where you crochet along with other people creating the same project. A each part of the pattern is released bit by bit, and you work at the same pace as other participants.

How it will work.

8 different designers (myself and 7 others) will design 8 mosaic crochet afghan stripes. The written pattern and chart for each design will be free on the designers’ blogs. To find the free patterns, scroll down on this post until you see pictures of each section and press the button that says “Go to the free pattern.”
Each section of the CAL will be released on Tuesdays and Fridays from July 1st through July 25th. Then, we’ll finish it all off with a border, to be released on July 29th.
I will send out an email to announce the release of each new design, or you can simply come to this page and click on the new design to be directed to the FREE pattern for that new section.
If you prefer to have a downloadable version of the pattern instead, you can purchase the full pattern, which includes the mosaic crochet pattern charts and written instructions for each section in a PDF.
After grabbing each new pattern, make sure you hop on over to the Juniper & Oakes Crochet Community. You can ask questions, share photos of your WIPs and finished squares, and maybe even watch Live videos. It will be a lot of fun! If you don’t have Facebook, you can still participate in the CAL by creating your blanket on your own. Definitely post pictures and share about the CAL on any social media you have. Be sure to tag me @juniperandoakes and use #MosaicInAMonthCAL so we can see your progress.
Join the Juniper & Oakes crochet community!
I will also be posting videos on YouTube! I already have a playlist for this CAL set up, and more videos will be added as they become available.

I will be sending out an email each time a new design is released. You will be the first to be notified of the next part of the CAL or any other news. Sign up now!
The Schedule.
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from July 1st-July 29th, a new part of the blanket will be released.
Each new section will be offered as a free pattern with mosaic crochet chart on the designer’s blog.
Scroll down to the bottom of the this page to find the picture of each new section.
If you don’t want to wait for each new section, go ahead and purchase the full blanket pattern ebook. This gives you instant access to all of the written instructions and charts for each blanket strip. This PDF version is perfect for downloading on your device, taking on the go, and printing.
How big will my blanket be?
Such a good question! The answer will depend on many factors: yarn, hook, tension, etc.
My blanket is approximately 45” x 50″.
This size of blanket makes a nice small throw or lapghan.
The Yarn.

The yarn I used for this blanket is Swish DK from Crochet.com. Swish is a 100% Fine Superwash Merino Wool that’s super soft and machine washable!
This free mosaic crochet Christmas blanket pattern was designed in three beautiful Christmassy colors, as well as a soft gray. Of course, you can use whatever colors you want! You could add some festive gold, make it in wintry shades of blue, or use a totally non-traditional holiday color scheme. It’s up to you! I will NOT take it personally if you take creative liberties on the color scheme. Actually, I always love seeing what amazing color schemes my community comes up with! So be sure to share pictures in the FB group.
The amount of yarn needed depends on different factors like yarn weight, hook size, and tension. Based on those factors, your mileage (or should I say yardage) may vary. However, for reference, my blanket used roughly 1845 yards of the gray (color A) and 492 yards each of red (B), green (C), and and blue (D).
Altogether, that’s 15 skeins of Dove Heather (gray) and 4 skeins each of Garnet Heather (red), Forest Heather (green), and Marine Heather (blue). You can also get all the yarn you need for this blanket in on handy kit. Purchase that kit from Crochet.com, here.

The Hook.
I used an H/5.00 mm hook to make my blanket. I own several Furls Streamline Metal Crochet Hooks and use them all the time. I love the way these hooks fit in my hand and how the yarn slides easily across the smooth metal. If you have never tried a Furls hook, I highly recommend you visit their website and order one now.
An H hook is my preference for this project but you don’t have to use that size. Choose whatever hook you’re comfortable using and that gives you the desired tension. Just be sure to make a swatch using the yarn & hook of your choice so you are not surprised by the size of your blanket.
The Mosaic Crochet Christmas in July Blanket
In the heat of the summer, the maybe last thing you’re thinking about is cozy crochet blankets. But with all the busyness of the holiday season, sometimes it can be hard to make time to crochet. So why not get a head start on your Christmas crochet projects now?
If you work along with the CAL schedule, you can have this blanket done by the end of July, which gives you plenty of time to focus on crochet Christmas gifts—or make another blanket! Of course, you can also work at your own pace. But having a group of other friendly crocheters to work with really helps with motivation!

What is overlay mosaic crochet?
I have written this whole post with the assumption that you all know what mosaic crochet means.
Overlay Mosaic Crochet is a technique that requires you to work in the BLO (back loop only) and then drop down to pick up the front loop of stitches from lower rows which creates textured stitches that lay over the stitches from previous rows and can be used to create wonderfully intricate patterns.
These patterns are worked in one direction only, fastening off the working yarn at the end of each row, and beginning again at the beginning of the piece — no turning involved. Each new row consists of only ONE color, but with the use of the sc and drop down dc stitches, you get the mosaic design. Most overlay mosaic patterns come with a chart. The symbols on the chart tell you when to use a dc and when to use the special drop down dc.
It seems complicated, but I promise, it’s super easy (and addictive) as you go.
Visit this blog post for a basic overview of the technique
Feel free to watch the video below to familiarize yourself a bit with the technique.
Please SUBSCRIBE to my channel, comment that you joined in from the Mosaic in a Month CAL, and like the videos. Thank you so much!
Mosaic YouTube Playlist
I have created a playlist on YouTube with the videos about this CAL; more will be added as they are released. Click here to access.
The Pattern.
As mentioned earlier, the free patterns for each blanket strip will be released three days each week on each designer’s blogs over the next month, but if you would like the full blanket pattern today, purchase the full pattern now! The full pattern includes printable charts AND written instructions for the whole blanket, plus pictures & video tutorials on mosaic crochet, and how to add a border.
The Sections:
Here is where the sections of the CAL will be located. Simply find the section you are looking for and click the “Go to the FREE pattern” button below the picture. You will be taken to the designer’s website where they have their free pattern.
Note: the way we can offer this CAL for free is with ads on the blog. If you do not like the ads, you can purchase the ad-free, printable pattern in the ebook.
How do I add the next section??
Simply work Row 1 of the next section onto the last row of the previous section.
Just act as if the pattern continues like normal just with a new chart!
Click to watch a video of where I explain this (from a different CAL).
Mosaic Charts e-Course
